Where the marks go
AS Sports Science and the Active Leisure Industry is a single 100-mark paper in 120 minutes, five questions covering the structure of the active leisure industry, hypokinetic disease and health monitoring, sports science and nutrition, participation barriers, and client consultation. Lifestyle and health is the single biggest topic area, worth over a third of the paper, and two of the five questions end in an extended Quality of Written Communication essay, worth 8 marks in Question 1 and 10 marks in Question 5, together close to a fifth of the whole paper.
Paper structure and timing
At 0.83 minutes per mark, budget close to a minute for every mark you see. The short 1 to 2-mark identification parts should take under two minutes each, the 3-mark structured explanation parts that make up most of the paper need two distinct development points, not just one, so budget closer to three minutes. The two extended QWC essays, 8 marks in Question 1(d) on safety practice and 10 marks in Question 5(c) on national health initiatives, deserve 8 to 10 minutes each: plan the paragraphs before you write a single sentence of continuous prose.
Where the technique marks actually sit
Most of this paper is 3-mark structured explanation questions, and a one-word or single-sentence answer will not score all 3 marks even if it is correct. These questions want an identification plus two separate development points, for example naming a fitness component and then explaining two distinct ways it helps a named sport or athlete, not a generic definition on its own. When a question asks about a specific athlete profile or sport, answer in that context: explain how core strength specifically helps a golfer's swing, not what core strength is in the abstract.
In nutrition questions, name the mechanism, not just the outcome: carbohydrate loading works through liver and muscle glycogen storage and a tapering training schedule over 24 to 72 hours before competition, not in the final hour, and the glycogenic index of the carbohydrate matters at a specific point in that window. In hypokinetic disease questions, explain prevention through the actual physiological mechanism, HDL and LDL cholesterol regulation, bone mineral density accretion, improved insulin sensitivity, rather than a vague claim that exercise "makes you healthy". Isotonic drinks replace electrolytes, sodium and potassium, and maintain blood glucose and plasma osmolality, not just water, state all of that when a question asks what an isotonic drink does.
Do not confuse warm-up and cool-down: warm-up prepares the body's systems through dynamic stretching and raises core temperature, cool-down prevents blood pooling and reduces delayed onset muscle soreness, these are different mechanisms with different purposes and get muddled under time pressure. Distinguish outcome goals, which depend on beating a competitor, from performance goals, which stay within the athlete's own control, when a question asks you to set or evaluate a goal.
CCEA conventions for this paper
The extended QWC essays use a banded mark scheme, and a bullet-point list, however accurate, will not reach the top band, the mark scheme wants coherent paragraphs built around specialist vocabulary. For the national health initiatives essay, name the actual scheme, its slogan and its specific targets, for example the five 80g portions in 5 A Day, a description that never names the initiative reads as vague even with the right general idea. For barrier and evaluate-style essays, cover both sides explicitly: historical obstacles to participation alongside modern commercial and institutional progress, a one-sided essay is capped regardless of its length.
Calculator technique
Use the calculator for the percentage-based figures this subject actually asks for: converting a training load to a percentage of one-repetition maximum, calculating a heart-rate training zone as a percentage of an athlete's working or maximum heart rate, or working out BMI or an energy balance figure where a question gives you the raw numbers. Write the formula you are using on the page first, then use the calculator only for the arithmetic, this keeps your method visible if the final number is queried. CCEA and JCQ rules do not permit any stored, retrievable information in your calculator, including saved formulae, notes or programs, so clear your calculator's memory before the exam and use exam mode if it has one, since a reset button alone does not clear stored programs.
Exam-day plan
Read every question for its sporting context before you answer, and write your response inside that context rather than as a generic definition. Plan both QWC essays against the bullet points implied by the question before writing continuous prose, and make sure your government-initiative essay names the scheme, not just its general aim. In the last few minutes, check that every 3-mark answer actually has two development points behind its opening statement.
