1. Understanding Arousal
Arousal is a state of mental and physical readiness. It ranges from deep sleep (low arousal) to intense excitement (high arousal). It is not "good" or "bad" on its own—it is simply how "energised" your body is.
There are four main theories you need to know about how arousal affects performance:
A. Drive Theory
This is the simplest theory. It suggests a linear relationship between arousal and performance. As arousal increases, the quality of performance increases equally.
The formula often used is: \(Performance = habit \times drive\)
- The "Habit": This is the "dominant response" (the skill you are most likely to perform).
- The "Drive": This is your arousal level.
The Problem: This theory is often criticized because even elite athletes can get "too hyped" and perform poorly. It doesn't account for the "choke" factor!
B. Inverted U Theory
This theory suggests that performance increases with arousal up to an optimal point. If arousal goes beyond this point, performance starts to decline.
- Under-aroused: You are bored or lack focus; performance is low.
- Optimal Arousal: You are "in the zone"; performance is at its peak.
- Over-aroused: You are too stressed or frantic; performance drops.

C. Catastrophe Theory

D. Zone of Optimal Functioning (ZOF)
Unlike the Inverted U, which suggests everyone has one peak, ZOF says that "the zone" is different for every athlete. Some performers (like a calm golfer) have a low zone, while others (like an aggressive boxer) have a high zone.
Peak Flow Experience
When an athlete is in their "Zone," they might experience Peak Flow. This is a state of total focus where the movement feels effortless, and the athlete feels completely in control. You might hear commentators say an athlete is "on fire"—that is Peak Flow!
2. Anxiety: The Mental and Physical Nerves
While arousal is just "energy," anxiety is the negative emotional state we feel when we are stressed. We split anxiety into two types:
- Cognitive Anxiety: The thoughts in your head (worry, fear of failure, loss of concentration).
- Somatic Anxiety: The physical feelings in your body (increased heart rate, sweating, muscular tension, "butterflies").
We also distinguish between Trait and State anxiety:
- Competitive Trait Anxiety: This is part of your personality. You are naturally a "worrier" in all competitive situations.
- Competitive State Anxiety: This is temporary. You feel anxious only because of a specific moment (e.g., taking a last-minute penalty).
How do we measure anxiety?
Scientists and coaches use three main methods. Each has "pros" (good points) and "cons" (bad points):
- Questionnaires: Easy to hand out to many people, but athletes might lie to look "tough."
- Observations: Watching an athlete's behavior (e.g., fidgeting). It’s "real life," but it’s subjective (the observer might misinterpret a yawn as boredom when it's actually nerves).
- Physiological Measures: Using tech to measure heart rate, blood pressure, or cortisol levels. This is objective and factual, but the equipment can be bulky and might actually make the athlete more stressed!
3. Stress Management Techniques
A stressor is anything that causes stress (e.g., a big crowd or a tough opponent). To keep performance high, athletes use cognitive (mental) and somatic (physical) techniques.
Cognitive (Mental) Techniques
These help calm the mind:
- Mental Rehearsal/Visualisation: Picturing yourself performing the skill perfectly.
- Imagery: Creating a "mental escape" to a calm place or imagining the feeling of success.
- Attentional Control & Cue Utilisation: Focusing only on the important things (cues). As arousal rises, we ignore the crowd and focus only on the ball.
- Thought Stopping: Using a mental "trigger" (like picturing a red stop sign) to halt negative thoughts.
- Positive Self-Talk: Replacing "I can't do this" with "I am prepared and strong."
Somatic (Physical) Techniques
These help calm the body:
- Biofeedback: Using electronic instruments to measure physical changes (like heart rate) so the athlete learns how to physically calm themselves down.
- Centering: Focusing on your "center of gravity" and your breathing to stay grounded.
- Breathing Control: Taking slow, deep breaths to reduce heart rate and tension.
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR): Tensing and then relaxing each muscle group one by one to remove physical stiffness.
