In this part of your Geography course, we move from looking at how tropical environments work naturally to how they are being changed by human activity. Tropical environments (both the humid rainforests and seasonally humid savannas) are some of the most beautiful but fragile places on Earth. We will look at why they are under threat and how people are trying to manage these challenges. Don't worry if it seems like a lot of problems—we will break them down step-by-step!
1. The Big Picture: Why are Tropical Environments Fragile?
Before we look at the challenges, remember that tropical ecosystems rely on a very tight nutrient cycle. In a rainforest, most nutrients are stored in the biomass (the living plants). When we change the environment, we break this cycle. If the trees are gone, the latosols (tropical soils) quickly lose their fertility because the heavy rain washes nutrients away (a process called leaching). This makes recovering from human "challenges" very difficult!
2. Challenge: Population Pressure
As the number of people living in or near tropical regions grows, the demand for resources increases. This is often called population pressure.
What happens?
• Land hunger: More people need more space for houses and small-scale farming.
• Fuelwood: In many savanna regions, people rely on wood for cooking, leading to the removal of trees and shrubs.
• Infrastructure: Governments build roads and power lines to support growing populations, which fragments the forest (breaks it into small, isolated pieces).

3. Challenge: Monoculture
Monoculture is a type of agriculture where only one single crop is grown over a large area (for example, palm oil, soya, or sugar cane).
Why is it a challenge?
• Loss of Biodiversity: A natural rainforest has thousands of species. A monoculture plantation has only one. This destroys habitats.
• Nutrient Depletion: Growing the same plant over and over uses up specific nutrients in the soil. Farmers then have to use heavy amounts of chemical fertilizers.
• Pests and Disease: In a natural forest, trees are spread out. In a monoculture, if a disease hits one plant, it can wipe out the entire plantation because they are all the same.
4. Challenge: Extractive Industries (Logging and Mining)
Both logging and mining involve taking valuable resources out of the tropical environment. Both cause massive physical change.
Logging
• Clear-cutting: This is where every tree in an area is chopped down. It completely destroys the climax vegetation.
• Selective logging: This sounds better because only certain trees are taken, but the heavy machinery used often crushes the surrounding smaller trees and compacts the soil so nothing can grow back.
Mining
• Tropical areas are often rich in minerals like iron ore, gold, and bauxite.
• Open-cast mining: This involves stripping away all the vegetation and topsoil to get to the rocks underneath. It leaves "moonscapes" where nothing can grow for decades.
• Pollution: Mining often uses toxic chemicals (like mercury in gold mining) which leak into tropical rivers, killing fish and poisoning local water supplies.
5. Challenge: Climate Change and Wildfires
Climate change is a global issue, but it has specific impacts on the tropics.
Changes in Rainfall:
Climate change can shift the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) or make ENSO (El Niño) events more frequent. This can lead to unexpected droughts in areas that are usually wet.
Increased Wildfires:
• While some savanna fires are natural, wildfires are becoming more common and intense.
• Drier conditions due to global warming turn the lush vegetation into fuel.
• Fires release \(CO_2\) (carbon dioxide) back into the atmosphere, which makes global warming even worse—a "positive feedback loop."

7. Your Case Study: One Tropical Ecosystem
The syllabus requires you to have a detailed specific example of either a Rainforest (like the Amazon or the Daintree) or a Savanna (like the Serengeti). When you study your case study, make sure you can answer these three questions:
1. What are the issues? (e.g., Is it mostly logging? Is it mining?)
2. What is being done? (Identify specific management projects or laws.)
3. Does it work? (This is the Evaluation. Is the forest still shrinking? Are local people happy? Is it too expensive?)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
• Thinking "Weathering" is a human challenge: Weathering (like hydrolysis or carbonation) is a natural physical process. Don't confuse it with human "challenges" like mining.
• Being too general: Don't just say "people cut down trees." In your exam, use terms like monoculture, biomass, and nutrient cycling.
• Forgetting the "Evaluation": In Paper 3, the examiners want to know your opinion on whether a strategy is a success or a failure. Use phrases like "On the one hand... but on the other hand..."
