Welcome to Your First Class Practical!
In Psychology, we don't just read about how people think and learn—we investigate it ourselves! For the learning and cognition context, you are required to conduct an experiment. This is a "hands-on" way to understand the mental processes that guide our behavior. Whether you are aiming for SL or HL, this practical is a cornerstone of your course and will directly help you with your Paper 2 exam and your Internal Assessment (IA) research proposal.

1. What is an Experiment?
In the context of learning and cognition, an experiment is a research method used to find out if one thing causes another. We call this a causal relationship.
Two Types of Experiments
For your class practical, you will use one of these two types:
- True Experiment: The researcher randomly assigns participants to different groups. You have full control over the independent variable (IV)—the thing you change to see what happens.
- Quasi-experiment: You still change an IV, but you cannot randomly assign people to groups because they belong to those groups naturally (e.g., comparing people who already use a specific mnemonic strategy vs. those who don't).

- Independent Variable (IV): The factor you manipulate (e.g., whether a student listens to music while studying).
- Dependent Variable (DV): The factor you measure (e.g., how many words they remember from a list).
- Standardization: Keeping everything the same for everyone so the test is fair.
2. The Rules of the Practical
The IB has specific requirements for this class practical that you must follow:
- Context: It must be focused on learning and cognition.
- Method: It must be an experiment (true or quasi-).
- Sample Size: You must have a minimum of \(5\) participants.
Don't worry if this seems small! In a real professional study, you’d need many more people, but for this class practical, the goal is to learn the process of research methodology.
3. Applying the Six Concepts
The IB Psychology course is built around six big ideas. When you design and run your experiment, think about how these concepts apply:
1. Causality: This is the "Why." Does changing the IV actually cause a change in the DV? For example, does "chunking" information cause better memory recall?
2. Measurement: How will you turn a mental process into a number? If you are testing "learning," will you measure it by the number of mistakes made or the time taken to finish a task?
3. Bias: Are your results skewed?
- Researcher bias: You might unconsciously encourage participants to act a certain way.
- Participant bias: They might try to guess what you want and change their behavior!
4. Change: In learning and cognition, we often look at how performance changes over time or under different conditions.
5. Perspective: Different researchers might interpret your results differently. One might see a memory trick as a cognitive tool, while another looks at it through a biological lens.
6. Responsibility: This is about ethics. You have a responsibility to make sure your participants are treated fairly, give their consent, and aren't stressed out by your experiment.
4. Step-by-Step: Conducting Your Experiment
Step 1: The Research Question
Keep it simple! "Does the presence of noise affect the number of words participants can recall from a list?"
Step 2: Design and Variables
Decide who your population of interest is (e.g., high school students). Define your IV and DV clearly.
Step 3: Ethics Check
Ensure you have informed consent. Your participants must know they can stop at any time.
Step 4: Data Collection
Run your test with at least \(5\) people. Be consistent! Use the same instructions for every person.
Step 5: Analysis
Look at your results. You might calculate the mean to see the average performance:
\(mean = sum(x) / n\)
You might also look at the standard deviation (\(sd\)) to see how spread out the scores are.
5. Why is this Practical Important? (The "Exam Connection")
You aren't just doing this for fun! This practical prepares you for two major assessments:
- Paper 2, Section A: This part of the exam has four compulsory questions specifically about the class practicals you did. You will need to describe what you did and evaluate it using the concepts like bias or causality.
- Internal Assessment (IA): Your IA is a research proposal. You must design a study using one of the four methods from your class practicals. Since you've already practiced an experiment here, you'll be much better at writing a proposal for one!
6. Common Pitfalls to Avoid
The "Goldilocks" Sample: The IB says a minimum of \(5\) participants. Don't try to test \(100\) people for a class practical—it will take too much time. Aim for a manageable number that allows you to see a pattern.
Vague Variables: Don't just say you are measuring "intelligence." That’s too broad! Say you are measuring "the score on a 10-item logic puzzle." This makes your measurement clear and objective.
Forgetting Ethics: Even in a small class practical, you must be a responsible researcher. Always debrief your participants afterward.
