Introduction to Papers, Boards, and Textiles

Welcome to one of the most versatile chapters in your A Level Product Design course! While we often focus on heavy-duty materials like steel or oak, papers, boards, and textiles are the unsung heroes of the design world. From the precision of a technical drawing on layout paper to the high-performance protection of a flame-resistant textile, these materials are everywhere. In this section, we will explore the specific types of paper and textiles you need to know for your exam. We’ll look at why a designer might choose one over the other, their unique "working properties," and how they can be finished to look professional.

1. Drawing and Printing Papers

Paper is generally categorized by its weight, measured in grams per square metre (\(gsm\)). Anything over \(200gsm\) is usually classified as board.

Drawing Papers

These are the papers you use in the design studio to get your ideas down on the page.
  • Layout Paper: This is thin and slightly transparent. Designers use it for "overlaying" drawings—you can sketch an idea, place a new sheet on top, and trace the best parts to improve the design.
  • Tracing Paper: Much more transparent and tougher than layout paper. It is used to copy drawings accurately or to layer complex technical information.
  • Copier Paper: This is your standard printer paper (usually \(80gsm\)). It is smooth, bleached white, and inexpensive.
  • Cartridge Paper: A high-quality drawing paper with a slightly textured ("toothy") surface. It is great for pencil sketches and ink drawings because it absorbs the medium well.

Commercial Printing Papers

These are used in industry for mass-produced items like letterheads or brochures.
  • Bond Paper: A high-quality, durable paper often used for official stationery and electronic printers. It has a nice "feel" (handle) to it.
  • Coated Paper: This paper has a coating (like clay) that stops ink from soaking into the fibres. This makes colors look much more vibrant. It comes in gloss (shiny) or matt (dull) finishes—think of high-end magazines or brochures.

2. Boards (Cardboard)

Boards are thicker, more rigid, and used for everything from architectural models to cereal boxes.
  • Mounting Board: Very thick and rigid. It is used for final presentations or for mounting photographs. It doesn't bend easily.
  • Corrugated Board: You'll recognize this from shipping boxes. It has a "fluted" (wavy) inner layer sandwiched between two flat layers. This provides an excellent strength-to-weight ratio and protects contents from impact.
  • Foam Board: This has a foam center (polystyrene) between two layers of card. it is incredibly lightweight and stays very flat, making it the "go-to" for high-quality 3D mock-ups.
  • Folding Box Board (FBB): Made of multiple layers of pulp. It is great for consumer packaging (like a perfume box) because it is easy to score and fold without cracking.
  • Foil-lined Board: This is board laminated with a thin layer of aluminium foil. It provides a barrier against moisture and heat. Example: Takeaway food containers or juice cartons.

Quick Tip: If an exam question asks why corrugated board is used for delivery boxes, remember to mention it is cheap, recyclable, and provides impact resistance due to the fluted layer.

3. Textiles: Fibres and Treatments

Textiles are materials made from fibres. In the exam, you need to distinguish between natural and manmade (synthetic) fibres.

Natural Fibres

These come from plants or animals.
  • Cotton: From the cotton plant. It is breathable, absorbent, and soft. However, it creases easily and takes a long time to dry.
  • Linen: From the flax plant. It is very stiff and strong, but like cotton, it creases easily. It is often used for summer clothing because it is very cool to wear.
  • Wool: From sheep. It is naturally warm (insulating), soft, and has high elasticity, meaning it returns to its shape after being stretched.

Manmade (Synthetic) Fibres

These are usually derived from petrochemicals (oil).
  • Nylon: Very strong and resistant to abrasion (rubbing). It is used for things like seatbelts or climbing ropes.
  • Polypropylene: A versatile plastic fibre. It doesn't absorb water, which makes it great for outdoor carpets or medical textiles.
  • Polyester: Very durable and resistant to chemicals. Most importantly, it is crease-resistant, which is why it's often blended with cotton.

Textile Treatments

Sometimes, we need to change how a textile behaves using chemicals.
  • Flame Resistant: Chemicals are applied to the fibres to stop them from igniting easily. This is vital for nightwear, upholstery, and firefighter uniforms.
  • PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene): You might know this as Teflon. When applied to fabrics, it makes them stain-resistant and waterproof (liquid beads up and rolls off).

4. Finishing Processes for Papers and Boards

Once a product is printed or cut, we can apply a "finish" to make it look better or last longer.
  • Laminating: Bonding a thin layer of plastic (usually \(PET\)) to the surface. This makes the paper waterproof and much stronger.
  • Varnishing: A clear coating (UV or oil-based) applied to give a high-gloss finish. It protects the ink from scuffing.
  • Hot Foil Blocking: Using heat and pressure to transfer a metallic foil (like gold or silver) onto the board. It adds a "premium" feel to luxury packaging.
  • Embossing: Using a die to press a raised pattern into the paper or board. It creates a 3D effect that you can feel with your fingers.

5. Performance Characteristics

How do we choose which material to use? We look at their properties. Here are the key ones from Topic 2 that apply here:
  • Durability: How long will it last? Nylon is very durable; layout paper is not.
  • Strength: Corrugated board is strong under compression; linen is strong under tension (pulling).
  • Absorbency: Cotton is highly absorbent; polypropylene and foil-lined board are not.
  • Biodegradability: Natural fibres and papers are generally biodegradable (they rot away), whereas manmade fibres like polyester can take hundreds of years to break down.
