Welcome to the Changing World of Work!
In this chapter, we are looking at how economies change and what that means for real people. Whether it's a country moving from farming to factories, or a city growing so fast that people have to make up their own jobs, these changes have huge impacts. We will also look at the big debate: Can the Earth actually support our growing population?
Note: This chapter builds on what you learned about the four employment sectors (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and Quaternary) in the first part of this topic.
1. The Impact of Sector Shifts
As a country develops, it goes through a sector shift. This usually means moving away from farming (Primary) towards manufacturing (Secondary) and eventually towards services (Tertiary). While this sounds like "progress," it brings both winners and losers.
A) Developed Countries (e.g., The UK)
Most developed countries have gone through deindustrialisation (the decline of the secondary/manufacturing sector).
Positive Impacts:
- Environment: Less air and water pollution as old "smokestack" factories close down.
- Opportunities: Growth in the quaternary sector (high-tech research and design) which offers high-paying, safe jobs.
- Regeneration: Old industrial sites can be turned into modern apartments or shopping centres.
Negative Impacts:
- Structural Unemployment: Factory workers may not have the skills to work in high-tech offices. This leads to long-term unemployment.
- The North-South Divide: In countries like the UK, industrial areas in the North often struggle more than the service-based South.
- Dereliction: Abandoned factories can become eyesores and attract crime.
B) Developing or Emerging Countries (e.g., India or China)
These countries are often going through industrialisation (a massive increase in the secondary sector).
Positive Impacts:
Wealth: Huge increase in GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and personal wages compared to subsistence farming.
Infrastructure: New roads, railways, and power grids are built to support factories.
Negative Impacts:
Environmental Damage: Rapid industrialisation often leads to heavy smog and polluted rivers.
Working Conditions: Workers may face long hours, low pay, and poor safety standards in "sweatshops."
Rural-Urban Migration: So many people move to cities for work that it can lead to overcrowding and the growth of slums.
2. Informal Employment in Megacities
A Megacity is a city with at least 10 million inhabitants (like Mumbai, Lagos, or Mexico City). Because these cities grow so fast, the government cannot create "formal" jobs (office or factory jobs with contracts and taxes) quickly enough. This leads to the Informal Sector.
Characteristics of Informal Work:
- No Contracts: You can be fired at any second with no warning.
- No Taxes: Workers don't pay tax, but they also don't get "sick pay" or pensions.
- Small Scale: Jobs like shoe-shining, street vending, recycling rubbish, or rickshaw driving.
- Low Capital: It doesn't cost much money to start; you just need your own labour.
Why does it happen? (Causes)
1. Rapid Migration: More people arrive from the countryside than there are jobs available in factories or offices.
2. Poverty: People need money immediately to survive; they cannot wait for a formal job interview.
3. Low Education: Many migrants lack the qualifications for "formal" service jobs.
Quick Review: Think of the informal sector as the "hidden" economy. It keeps people alive, but it doesn't offer them security!
3. Population and Resources: The Big Debate
As the world’s population grows, geographers wonder: Will we run out of food and energy? There are two main theories you need to know.
Theory 1: Thomas Malthus (The Pessimist)
Writing in the late 1700s, Malthus believed that humans were headed for disaster.
- He argued that population grows geometrically \( (1, 2, 4, 8, 16...) \).
- However, food production only grows arithmetically \( (1, 2, 3, 4, 5...) \).
- The Result: Eventually, there are too many people and not enough food. This leads to a Malthusian Catastrophe (famine, war, or disease) which resets the population to a lower level.
Theory 2: Esther Boserup (The Optimist)
Writing in the 1960s, Boserup had a much more hopeful view.
- She famously said, "Necessity is the mother of invention."
- She argued that as population grows and approaches the limit of resources, humans will invent new technology to produce more.
- Examples: The Green Revolution, genetically modified (GM) crops, and irrigation systems are all "Boserupian" solutions that proved Malthus wrong so far.
Common Mistake to Avoid: Don't assume Malthus was "wrong" and Boserup was "right." While technology has helped us so far, some people (Neo-Malthusians) argue that climate change and water shortages might mean Malthus was just a few hundred years early!
