D. Intra-uterine Devices (IUDs)

  • Advantages: Works for a long time (5 to 10 years); you don't have to "remember" to do anything once it is in place.

E. Sterilisation

This is a surgical procedure to make a person permanently unable to reproduce.

  • How it works: In men (vasectomy), the sperm ducts are cut or tied. In women (tubal ligation), the fallopian tubes (oviducts) are cut or tied so the egg cannot meet the sperm.
  • Advantages: Permanent and virtually 100% effective.
  • Disadvantages: Requires surgery; very difficult or impossible to reverse; no STI protection.

2. IVF (In-vitro Fertilisation)

"In-vitro" is Latin for "in glass," because the fertilisation happens in a laboratory dish rather than inside the woman's body.

  5. Embryo Transfer: Once the embryos have reached a certain size (usually a tiny ball of cells), one or two are placed into the woman's uterus.
  6. Pregnancy: If an embryo successfully implants into the lining of the uterus, the woman becomes pregnant.
