Energy Consumption: Designers must consider how much energy a product uses during its operation. For example, designing a kettle that boils only the amount of water needed saves a lot of electricity over time!

B. Sale and Distribution

Responsibility doesn't stop at the factory gate. It includes:

Packaging: Is the packaging necessary? Is it biodegradable or recyclable? Using less material for packaging reduces waste and makes transportation more efficient.

Transportation: Designing products to be lightweight or "flat-pack" (like IKEA furniture) means more items can fit in one truck, reducing \(CO_{2}\) emissions.

C. Product Disposal

What happens when the user is finished with the product? This is a key Social Responsibility.

Ease of Disassembly: Can the product be easily taken apart so the metal, plastic, and electronic parts can be recycled? If a product is glued together, it usually ends up in a landfill.

Biodegradability: Will the materials break down naturally without harming the soil or water?

2. Resource Conservation and Sustainable Development

You will often hear the term Sustainable Development. But what does it actually mean?

To achieve this, designers focus on Resource Conservation:

1. Reducing: Using fewer raw materials and less energy in the first place.

2. Reusing: Designing products that can be used more than once or repurposed for something else.

3. Recycling: Processing old materials to make new products.

In the HKDSE, you might be asked how a designer can promote sustainability. Remember these points:

Green Design is an approach where environmental factors are the primary focus. It isn't just about "saving trees"; it actually improves our Quality of Life.

How Green Design helps us:

Health and Safety: Environment-friendly processes often remove toxic chemicals from production. For example, using water-based paints instead of chemical-heavy solvents makes the air cleaner for workers and users.

Efficiency: New technologies like Miniaturisation (making electronics smaller) mean we use fewer materials and less power, often making products more portable and convenient.

Smart Materials: Using modern materials that react to the environment (like glass that tints itself in sunlight) can reduce the need for air conditioning, saving money and energy.

4. Appropriate Technology

Sometimes, the "newest" or "most expensive" technology isn't the best choice. This leads us to the concept of Appropriate Technology.

Definition: Technology that is suitable for the social, environmental, and economic context of the people who will use it.

Characteristics of Appropriate Technology:

1. Simple to Maintain: If a machine breaks in a remote village, can the local people fix it with basic tools? If not, it might not be "appropriate."

2. Low Cost: It should be affordable for the target users.

3. Uses Local Resources: It uses materials available nearby rather than importing expensive parts from overseas.

4. Environmentally Sound: It should not damage the local ecosystem. For example, using a solar-powered pump instead of a diesel generator in a sunny region.

Analogy: Imagine you need to travel 1km in a crowded city. A supercar (High Tech) is powerful, but a bicycle (Appropriate Tech) is cheaper, easier to park, creates zero pollution, and might actually get you there faster!

5. Social Responsibilities and Ethics

As a designer, you have a Professional Ethic to look after your users. This includes:

User-Centred Design: Making sure the product is easy and safe for everyone to use, including the elderly or people with disabilities.

Health and Safety: Ensuring that the product doesn't have sharp edges, toxic materials, or dangerous electrical parts.

Product Disposal: Providing clear instructions on how to dispose of a product safely, especially if it contains batteries or hazardous electronic waste.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Thinking "Green Design" is only about recycling.
Correction: It starts at the Design stage, including material choice and energy use during production!
