Assessment Structure & Overview
The 2024 CCEA GCSE Hospitality examination is split evenly across Unit 1: The Hospitality Industry [GPT11] and Unit 2: Hospitality and the Customer [GPT21]. Each paper carries 65 marks and runs for 60 minutes, averaging roughly 1 mark per minute. The overall assessment is well-balanced, testing fundamental industry operations, dietary management, customer care, and marketing strategies.
Where the Marks Are Won
Across both papers, the bulk of marks (over 70%) is distributed across structured 2-mark sub-questions following a classic ‘identify and explain/elaborate’ structure (1 mark for a valid point, 1 mark for practical amplification). Foundational recall questions—such as listing bathroom amenities, true/false nutrition items, and identifying linked sectors—provide rapid, accessible marks. The major discriminators sit in the extended 9-mark response at the end of each paper: evaluating hotel star-rating upgrades (Unit 1, Question 6) and discussing proactive upselling and suggestive selling strategies for waiting staff (Unit 2, Question 6).
Examiner Pitfalls & Key Traps
- One-sided evaluations: In Unit 1 Question 6, candidates who present only positive or negative impacts are restricted to Level 2 (maximum 6/9 marks), regardless of quality. Both benefits and challenges must be balanced.
- Truncated 2-mark responses: Stating a brief bullet point without contextual explanation or example forfeits the second available mark in questions requiring descriptions or explanations.
- Vague operational terms: Conflating off-the-job training with general induction, or offering generic marketing methods without tailoring them to specific business scenarios (e.g., local fast food outlet promotions).
Top Revision & Exam Strategy
Ensure mastery of core definitions across customer care standards, health and safety regulations (COSHH, FHRS), and job role responsibilities. When answering 2-mark questions, systematically employ the Point + Development technique. For 9-mark extended responses, structure your answer with clear thematic headings, balanced arguments, industry-specific terminology, and a justified evaluative conclusion.
