The May 2025 IB History Paper 3 maintains the rigorous standard expected of HL depth studies. Across all four regional options (Africa & Middle East, Asia & Oceania, Europe, and the Americas), the examination tests students' depth of factual knowledge, conceptual clarity, and critical historiographical evaluation. Each essay requires a sharp, sustained thesis responding directly to command terms such as Evaluate, To what extent, and Discuss.
Where the Marks Are Won
Marks in Paper 3 are governed by the standard 15-mark essay rubric:
- Band 13–15: Demands a clear focus on the precise question, seamless integration of multiple perspectives/counterarguments, highly specific historical evidence (dates, actors, treaty terms, statistics), and an analytical conclusion that synthesizes factors rather than just summarizing them.
- Band 10–12: Sound analytical structure and accurate context, but often lacks depth in counter-perspective evaluation or displays minor factual vagueness.
Common Examiner Pitfalls to Avoid
- Narrative Trap: Chronologically listing events rather than evaluating thematic arguments (e.g., merely recounting the events of the Russian Civil War rather than weighing leadership against White structural disunity).
- One-Sided Arguments: Failing to evaluate the counter-thesis in 'To what extent' questions (e.g., arguing only that economic factors caused the Mfecane without evaluating ecological, political, or leadership dynamics).
- Imbalanced Comparisons: Giving excessive weight to one case study while neglecting the second in comparative questions (e.g., comparing the MPLA and UNITA, or two Latin American independence movements).
Exam Strategy & Time Allocation
With 150 minutes to complete 3 essays, allocate exactly 50 minutes per question (5 minutes outlining the thesis and paragraph structure, 40 minutes writing, and 5 minutes reviewing). Ensure every paragraph starts with an analytical topic sentence directly linking back to the question prompt.
