Question 1

Candidates answer Question 2 of the Listening paper, which requires English, using words lifted straight from the Spanish audio, or slip a Spanish word into an otherwise English answer.

Accepted Answer

Write the answer in full, natural English. If you cannot recall the English word, describe the idea in English rather than leaving a Spanish word in the sentence, because markers cannot credit an untranslated term.

Question 2

In the AS 3 essay, candidates narrate the plot of the film or novel instead of answering the set question.

Accepted Answer

Treat each of the three bullet points as an argument to prove, not a scene to describe. Open each paragraph with a claim that answers the bullet, then support it with one or two specific details from the text.

Question 3

Preterite and future verb endings lose their accents, durmio for durmió, iras for irás, and question words such as cuándo and cuál are written without their accent.

Accepted Answer

Check every verb ending and every question word for an accent before moving on to the next sentence. An unaccented preterite or future form is marked as an accuracy error even when the rest of the sentence is correct.

Question 4

In Sections B and C, a two-mark comprehension question is answered with only one of the two required details from the passage.

Accepted Answer

When a question is worth two marks, assume it wants two separate pieces of information. Reread the relevant sentence and check you have given two distinct facts, not one fact stated twice.

Question 5

Direct object pronouns (lo, la, los, las) are confused with the pronouns used after a preposition (él, ella, ellos, ellas) in pronoun-replacement exercises.

Accepted Answer

Before writing the sentence, work out what job the pronoun is doing. If it replaces the direct object of the verb it must be lo, la, los or las. If it follows a preposition such as con or para, it takes the prepositional form.

Question 6

Students assume the subjunctive is only triggered by present-tense wishes or doubts, and miss it in temporal clauses about the future, such as cuando llegue or antes de que salga.

Accepted Answer

Learn the temporal conjunctions, cuando, antes de que, hasta que, en cuanto, as a fixed trigger list for the subjunctive whenever they refer to something that has not happened yet.

Question 7

Interrogative pronouns are chosen by habit rather than by what the question needs: qué is used where cuál is required, or quién where quiénes is needed for a plural subject.

Accepted Answer

Check what the question is asking for. Use cuál or cuáles when choosing from a set of options, qué before a noun or for a definition, and match quién or quiénes to a singular or plural subject.

Question 8

Negative words such as nadie, nada and ninguno are mixed up or placed in the wrong position in the sentence, especially in Section C transformation exercises.

Accepted Answer

Learn the three as a set: nadie for no one, nada for nothing, ninguno or ninguna for not any, agreeing with the noun. Put no before the verb unless the negative word itself comes first.
