Home Economics: Food and Nutrition 3310
CCEA GCSE Home Economics: Food and Nutrition is decided by whether Section C answers are written in paragraphs, not bullet points, and by naming the actual consequence of a nutrient, not just calling it healthy. This page covers the written paper and its most common mistakes.

The written paper is almost entirely short answer and extended writing, with occasional simple arithmetic around energy values per gram of protein, fat and carbohydrate. Where a calculator is used, the standard JCQ rule applies: no stored, retrievable information of any kind, including formulae, notes or text, and no symbolic algebra or internet or communication functions. There is no CCEA-specific calculator rule for this subject beyond the general JCQ position.

4Extended writing (Section C)
Writing the three Section C answers as bullet points or a list of disconnected statements instead of developed paragraphs.
Write Section C in full paragraphs. Turn every point into a sentence that also explains why it matters or what it leads to, since list-style answers are capped at Level 2 under CCEA's mark scheme. 3Being an effective consumer when shopping for food
Giving only the positive or only the negative side of a 4, 6, or 9-mark evaluate question, for example listing the benefits of a shopping app with nothing on its drawbacks.
Plan one point for and one point against before you write, and finish with a brief judgement on which matters more in the situation described. 4Nutritional and dietary needs
Answering only one half of a two-part question, for example covering dietary advice but leaving out lifestyle advice when a question asks for both.
Check the question for every factor it names and give each one its own developed point. Marks are allocated separately to each named part. 3Nutritional and dietary needs
Giving generic nutritional advice for a lifecycle group instead of advice specific to that stage, for example general healthy eating tips rather than advice tailored to pregnancy or adolescence.
Name the lifecycle group in every point and explain why that stage has that particular need, such as extra iron for adolescent girls or extra folate in early pregnancy. 2Macronutrients and micronutrients
Assuming plant-based, non-haem iron is absorbed as efficiently as haem iron from meat, without mentioning that vitamin C improves its absorption.
State that non-haem iron from plant sources is absorbed less efficiently than haem iron, and that eating it alongside a source of vitamin C improves absorption.
Treating 'Display Until' as a legally binding safety date in the same way as 'Use By' or 'Best Before'.
State that 'Use By' is the legally binding safety date, 'Best Before' relates to quality rather than safety, and 'Display Until' is a retailer stock control instruction with no legal safety meaning.
Describing bacterial growth conditions without giving specific temperature bands, such as the danger zone between 5 and 63 degrees Celsius or a fridge temperature below 5 degrees.
Quote the actual temperature figures rather than saying food should be kept 'cold' or 'hot enough', the specific numbers are what the mark scheme checks for.
Describing the Environmental Health Practitioner's role only in terms of closing unsafe restaurants, missing their broader statutory powers around food fraud, allergen enforcement, testing, and public education.
List more than one statutory power when this role comes up: inspection and closure, but also sampling and testing, allergen and labelling enforcement, and public health education.
