Question 1

Candidates answer a Section B question, which requires English, in Spanish, or a Section A question, which requires Spanish, in English.

Accepted Answer

Read the instruction line for each section before answering, every time, not just once at the start of the paper. There is no credit for a correct idea given in the wrong language.

Question 2

The Unit 4 extended essay leaves out one or more of the five required bullet points, which caps the communication band regardless of the quality of the rest of the answer.

Accepted Answer

Before writing, list the five bullet points on your plan and tick each one off as you cover it. Treat them as five roughly equal blocks rather than writing at length on the first two.

Question 3

In multiple choice and matching questions, candidates select more options than the question asks for, triggering a mark deduction for each extra selection.

Accepted Answer

Count the number of options the question actually wants and select no more than that. If unsure between two answers, pick the one you are more confident about rather than selecting both.

Question 4

Sentence translation into Spanish uses the wrong tense, confusing a single completed past action, the preterite, with a present or ongoing habitual action, the imperfect.

Accepted Answer

Ask whether the English sentence describes one finished event or a repeated or background situation. A finished single event takes the preterite; a habitual or ongoing one takes the imperfect.

Question 5

In the Speaking role-play, candidates answer a question about future plans in the past tense, or vice versa, which caps that cue at one mark out of two even when the vocabulary is accurate.

Accepted Answer

Listen for the tense in the question itself and match it in your answer before you worry about extra detail or vocabulary.

Question 6

Preparation notes for the Speaking exam are written as full sentences that exceed the word limit allowed on the Candidate Preparation Sheet.

Accepted Answer

Practise writing single-word or short-phrase prompts for each bullet point rather than full sentences, so the habit is automatic under exam conditions.

Question 7

Similar-looking vocabulary is confused under time pressure, for example desván (attic) with despacho (study), or lavavajillas (dishwasher) with lavadora (washing machine).

Accepted Answer

When revising topic vocabulary, group words that look or sound alike and test them against each other specifically, rather than only testing each word in isolation.

Question 8

The Unit 4 essay is written fluently but almost entirely in the present tense, which limits the Grammar and Structures band regardless of vocabulary range.

Accepted Answer

Plan for at least one bullet point in the past tense and one in the future tense before you start writing, so tense range is built in rather than an afterthought.
