GCSE English Language (CCEA) exam tips built from real examiner reports: why feature-spotting earns almost nothing without stating the effect, the SPaG myth that costs marks in reading tasks, and how to write a comparison instead of two essays.

A calculator is not needed for any part of this subject. GCSE English Language is assessed entirely through reading and writing tasks, with no numerical or data-based content, so no calculator rule applies beyond the standard JCQ position that a calculator brought into any exam room must have no stored, retrievable information.
- AO1: AO1: speak to communicate clearly and purposefully; listen and respond to speakers' ideas; interact with others; create and sustain different roles (20%)
- AO2: AO2: understand variations in spoken language and evaluate the impact of spoken language choices (10%)
- AO3: AO3: read and understand texts, develop interpretations of writers' ideas, explain and evaluate writers' techniques (35%)
- AO4: AO4: write clearly, effectively and imaginatively for task and purpose; organise and sequence ideas; use accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar (35%)

常見錯誤
- 1high涉及分數: 4Reading and language analysis tasks (both units)
Devices such as alliteration, a rule of three, or an emotive word choice are named without any explanation of what they do to the reader.
如何避免: Attach a 'which does what' sentence to every device you name. Naming it earns very little; explaining its effect on tone or persuasion is where the marks sit. - 2high涉及分數: 3Unit 1 Task 3: comprehension and retrieval
Retrieval questions instructing 'in your own words' get answered with the text quoted directly, or with only a single word changed from the original.
如何避免: Read the relevant section, then close it in your mind and restate the point using your own vocabulary and sentence structure before you write it down. - 3high涉及分數: 3Reading tasks (Section B, both units)
Candidates spend exam time proofreading Section B reading answers for spelling and punctuation, on the belief that SPaG affects the mark, when it does not: the mark grids assess AO3 reading only, and examiners are told to ignore SPaG errors there.
如何避免: Do not check Section B for SPaG. Redirect that time to Section A, where technical accuracy is worth 30 marks in its own right. - 4high涉及分數: 4Unit 4 Task 2: comparative literary reading
The comparative reading task in Unit 4 is answered as two separate essays, one on each text, placed one after the other instead of genuinely compared.
如何避免: Make a point about Text A, then say directly how Text B handles the same idea, whether it agrees, contrasts, or shifts register. Build the comparison into every paragraph. - 5medium涉及分數: 3Unit 4 Task 2: comparative literary reading
In comparative tasks, one text gets detailed treatment while the second is dealt with superficially, in only a sentence or two.
如何避免: Give both texts equal analytical depth. Plan matching points for each text before you start writing so neither one is shortchanged. - 6high涉及分數: 4Section A extended writing (both units)
Candidates write longer Section A responses on the assumption that length alone raises the Competence Level, producing rambling pieces with weak sentence control.
如何避免: Match your length to the task and keep every paragraph purposeful. A shorter, precisely structured piece that fits the named audience and purpose scores higher than a long, unfocused one. - 7high涉及分數: 4Technical accuracy (Section A writing)
Comma splicing and inconsistent sentence boundaries run through Section A writing, pulling an otherwise able piece down a full Competence Level on the technical accuracy strand.
如何避免: Vary your sentence structures on purpose, and use full stops with confidence instead of joining independent clauses with a comma. - 8medium涉及分數: 3Time management across both units
Time runs out on the final Section B task because Section A, or an earlier reading task, is allowed to overrun its budget.
如何避免: Hold to 55 minutes for Section A and 50 minutes for Section B, and move on from a task once its time budget is used, even if the answer feels unfinished.
