This subject involves little calculation, and the specification does not set out any subject-specific calculator rule. Where a simple calculation is needed, for example working out a baby's age in weeks or a percentage of a daily nutrient requirement, the general JCQ and CCEA rule applies: a calculator must have no lid or case with printed instructions or formulae, must not offer symbolic algebra manipulation or a connection to another device, and must not have any retrievable information stored in it, including saved formulae, notes or programs. Clear the memory before the exam and use exam mode if your calculator has one.

Using a vague, everyday word instead of the exact medical or developmental term the mark scheme wants, for example writing 'sickness' rather than 'nausea' or 'morning sickness', or 'baby dies' rather than 'spontaneous loss before 24 weeks'.

Build a working list of the specific terms for pregnancy signs, symptoms and outcomes as you revise, and practise writing the named term rather than a description that circles around it.
4Feeding the newborn baby

Writing a one-sided answer to a 6 or 9-mark evaluate or discuss question, covering only advantages or only disadvantages, which is capped at Level 2, roughly half the available marks.

Plan a point for and a point against before you start writing, and finish with a short sentence that states a judgement rather than only listing points.
2Child health and education

Confusing the roles of a midwife, health visitor, GP and paediatrician when a question names a specific professional in a scenario.

Fix each role to one job: midwife covers pregnancy and birth, health visitor supports the family after birth in the community, GP is the family's general doctor, paediatrician is a hospital specialist for children.

Leaving out the specific biological site or mechanism in an answer, such as not naming the fallopian tube as the site of fertilisation, or describing the placenta's function too generally.

Learn the specific location or mechanism as a fixed fact for each process and state it by name, since the mark scheme often awards the mark only for that named detail.
1The newborn baby

Describing a newborn reflex in everyday terms, such as writing 'grabbing' or 'sucking thumb', instead of the named reflex, 'grasp reflex' or 'sucking reflex'.

Learn the newborn reflexes by their proper names and use those names directly, rather than describing what the baby appears to be doing.
4Child health and education

Answering only one half of a two-part prompt, for example discussing the parents' role in school readiness but leaving out the school's role, or covering food preparation but not cooking safety.

Read the question for how many distinct parts it asks for, and give each part its own clearly separated answer before moving on.
1The newborn baby

Giving an incomplete name for a standard or safety mark, such as writing 'kite' instead of 'Kitemark' or 'BSI Kitemark'.

Write the full, correct name of any standard or safety mark exactly as it appears on your revision notes, not a shortened or informal version.
2Child health and education

Giving a generic symptom in a clinical question, such as writing 'crying' or 'sickness' for meningitis instead of a specific named sign like a high-pitched cry or a non-blanching rash.

Revise the named clinical signs for each condition on the specification and quote them specifically, rather than a general description of a baby seeming unwell.
