A calculator is useful for the gear, pneumatic and electronic calculations in this subject, and CCEA's general rule applies: no calculator with a computer algebra system, no borrowing a calculator from another candidate, and nothing stored in memory that could be retrieved during the exam, including formulae, notes or text. If your calculator has an exam mode, switch it on. It clears stored data far more reliably than the reset button, which only resets display settings and leaves stored programs or text in memory.

  • AO1: AO1: recall, select and communicate their knowledge and understanding of technology and design in a range of contexts (30%)
  • AO2: AO2: apply skills, knowledge and understanding, including quality standards in a variety of design contexts, and plan and carry out investigations and making tasks involving an appropriate range of tools, equipment, materials and processes (40%)
  • AO3: AO3: analyse and evaluate evidence, design proposals and outcomes, make reasoned judgements and present conclusions and recommendations (30%)

計算機程式

Chain gear-ratio calculations with the ANS key

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

用途: Carries an exact driver-to-driven tooth ratio into a velocity or output speed calculation without a rounding slip partway through a compound gear train question.

使用時機: Any compound gear train, pulley or velocity ratio question with more than one calculation stage.

步驟
Work out the driver-to-driven tooth ratio, then press ANS to feed that exact value straight into the velocity or output speed calculation, instead of writing the ratio down and retyping a rounded version.

考試提示: This is a live, in-exam technique only. CCEA and JCQ ban anything stored in a calculator's memory before the exam, including formulae or old working, so clear your calculator and switch on exam mode if it has one before you sit down.

Work pneumatic force out in one continued calculation

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

用途: Removes the risk of forgetting to subtract the piston rod area, or rounding it too early, in an instroke force calculation.

使用時機: Any pneumatic cylinder force or air consumption question involving the piston rod area on the instroke.

步驟
Calculate the full piston area, subtract the rod area, and multiply by pressure in one continuous calculator entry using brackets, so no intermediate area needs to be written down and retyped.

考試提示: Use this only for figures calculated during the exam. No stored programme or formula list is permitted in the calculator you bring in.

Use memory recall for Ohm's law and power chains

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

用途: Keeps a current value exact when it feeds into a following power calculation, instead of reintroducing rounding error.

使用時機: Any electronics question that gives voltage and resistance and then asks for power, or chains two circuit calculations together.

步驟
Calculate current from voltage equals current times resistance, store it with the memory-store key (M+ or STO), then recall it (MR or RCL) for the power calculation rather than retyping a rounded figure.

考試提示: This works only with values found live in the exam. Clear your calculator's memory beforehand: a manual reset does not remove stored data, so use exam mode if your calculator has one.

常見錯誤

  1. 1high涉及分數: 2Computer Control Systems and Flowcharts

Leaving a decision box in a flowchart evaluating to 'No' without a return loop arrow, so the routine never closes.

如何避免: Trace every path from the start of the flowchart to an end point before submitting it. Any decision box needs a labelled path out for every outcome it can produce.
  2. 2medium涉及分數: 1Mechanical Control Systems: Motion, Components and Mechanisms

Giving a gear, pulley or velocity ratio as a bare number or fraction instead of the standard ratio format, for example '4' instead of '1:4'.

如何避免: Always write the answer with a colon, even if the working already makes the value obvious. The mark scheme rewards the format, not just the number.
  3. 3medium涉及分數: 2Potential Dividers, LEDs, Thyristors and Transistors

Drawing a flywheel diode across an inductive relay coil with the wrong polarity or not in parallel with the coil.

如何避免: Learn the standard protection circuit by heart: the diode goes in parallel with the coil, cathode toward the supply, so it conducts only when the coil's field collapses.
  4. 4high涉及分數: 1Tools, Processes and Production Methods

Naming a generic tool such as 'marker' or 'saw' in manufacturing questions instead of the precise piece of equipment the mark scheme wants, such as odd-leg calipers, a scriber or a bradawl.

如何避免: Learn the correct name for every marking-out and measuring tool in the specification, not just what it looks like or does.
  5. 5high涉及分數: 3Pneumatic Systems and Control

Calculating pneumatic instroke retraction force from the full piston area, forgetting to subtract the piston rod's cross-sectional area first.

如何避免: Work out the full piston area and the rod area as two separate steps, subtract them, and only then multiply by pressure. Show all three numbers in your working.
  6. 6medium涉及分數: 2Potential Dividers, LEDs, Thyristors and Transistors

Confusing the base, collector and emitter terminals of an NPN transistor when labelling or completing a schematic diagram.

如何避免: Practise labelling a bare transistor symbol from memory until the three terminals are automatic, rather than relying on recognising a complete circuit.
  7. 7high涉及分數: 3Health and Safety; CAD and CAM

Writing vague safety platitudes such as 'wear protection' in extended QWC answers instead of naming the actual equipment involved, such as machine guards, chuck keys or sacrificial boards.

如何避免: Before you write a safety point, ask what specific piece of equipment or procedure it refers to, and name it. A general statement earns nothing on its own.
