N2 文章の文法: Steering Formal Prose
At N2, the cloze passage (5 items) reads like a magazine column or light editorial: written-style grammar (である調 possible), layered connectors, and blanks that test stance — does the writer concede, insist, or pivot here? The mechanical skills from N3 carry over; this chapter adds the N2 connector arsenal, stance-marking sentence enders, and a worked passage in the exam's register.
1. The N2 Connector Arsenal
| Signal | Connectors | Nuance |
|---|---|---|
| Stacking | しかも, その上, おまけに, さらに | おまけに adds misfortune; その上 adds formally; しかも adds with force |
| Contrast/pivot | ところが, それなのに, それにしても, 一方(で) | それなのに = indignant "and yet"; それにしても = "even allowing for that" |
| Unexpected reversal | かえって, 逆に | result opposite to intent: 薬を飲んだら、かえって悪くなった |
| Restating | 要するに, つまり, すなわち, 言い換えれば | 要するに compresses an argument; すなわち equates formally |
| Supplement | ちなみに, なお, もっとも | ちなみに = trivia aside; なお = official addendum; もっとも = "mind you," partial retreat |
| Resignation/decision | どうせ, いずれにしても, それなら | どうせ carries a shrug; いずれにしても closes debate |
| Sequence/outcome | そうすると, すると, やがて, 果たして | 果たして opens a "will it really?" question — expect だろうか |
| Memory jog | そういえば | "come to think of it" — introduces an anecdote |
The precision pairs at N2: かえって vs 逆に (both "contrary"; かえって = worsened by the very remedy), もっとも vs しかし (もっとも retreats a step without reversing; しかし reverses), なお vs ちなみに (official addendum vs casual trivia). Classify the relation, then match register.
2. Stance Enders: How the Writer Signs Each Sentence
N2 cloze blanks frequently sit at sentence ends, testing which stance the flow demands:
| Ender | Stance |
|---|---|
| 〜のではないだろうか | polite assertion (the essay claim!) |
| 〜と考えられる | objective verdict from evidence |
| 〜に違いない/に他ならない | strong conviction / emphatic identification |
| 〜というものだ/というものではない | defining / rejecting a simple equation |
| 〜ものだ | general truth (or nostalgia with た) |
| 〜てはならない/〜べきではない | prohibition, duty |
| 〜ざるを得ない | reluctant conclusion |
| 〜つつある | ongoing change (trend paragraphs) |
| 〜まい | literary "probably not / I shall not" |
Flow logic: a paragraph piling evidence ends in と考えられる; a personal essay's climax takes のではないだろうか; a trend description takes つつある; a moral takes ものだ/てはならない. The blank's job is set by its paragraph's job.
3. Cohesion at Essay Scale
- Topic chains with contrast: 〜はというと re-opens a contrasted topic (父はというと…); 一方(で)pivots between two tracked subjects. Cloze answers must keep BOTH threads alive.
- こそ for pinpointing: 今年こそ, これこそが — blanks before が/を asking for emphasis often want こそ.
- Formal reference: この点, その結果, これに対して — noun-fied references replace bare それ; match the noun to the antecedent's type (a point? a result? a contrast?).
- である-register discipline: a である essay rejects です/ます options mid-flow (except inside quotes). Register mismatch = instant elimination, same as N3 but now bidirectional.
4. Worked Passage (Exam Simulation)
- Statistics presented → warning against hasty conclusion: a pivot — しかし/ところが(essay register: しかし).
- "the amount read has, ___, not decreased" — an adverb reinforcing the surprising claim: むしろ/少しも? The flow wants "if anything/not at all": むしろ (rather, if anything) fits the reversal of expectation.
- Concession re-opening: "That said, the stamina for long texts HAS declined" — もっとも (mind you — partial retreat without abandoning the thesis).
- Trend-in-progress: 衰えつつある — the ongoing-change ender for a trend clause.
The passage's skeleton — claim, pivot, evidence, もっとも-retreat, ではないだろうか-finish — is THE N2 essay shape. Learn it here; harvest it in 読解 (the same shape carries 主張理解).
5. Strategy Checklist
- Read the full passage; label each paragraph's job (evidence? pivot? retreat? claim?).
- Connector blanks: classify relation → register → choose. かえって needs a backfired remedy; もっとも needs a retreat, not a reversal.
- Ender blanks: match the paragraph's job (verdict/claim/trend/moral) to the stance table.
- Register sweep: では/だ/である consistency kills one option per item on average.
- 5 items ≈ 7 minutes including the read.
Summary & Key Takeaways
- N2 cloze = essay steering: stacking (しかも/おまけに), pivots (それなのに/それにしても), backfires (かえって), retreats (もっとも), addenda (なお/ちなみに), compressions (要するに).
- Sentence enders sign the stance: のではないだろうか (claim), と考えられる (verdict), つつある (trend), ものだ (truth), ざるを得ない (reluctant conclusion).
- Cohesion tools: はというと, 一方で, こそ, noun-fied references (この点/その結果), である-register discipline.
- The claim–pivot–retreat–assert essay shape repeats across 文章の文法 and 読解 — one skeleton, many points.
