Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you went there? Or have you accidentally called your new teacher by your old teacher’s name? Don't worry—your brain isn't broken! In Psychology, we look at why these things happen. This chapter focuses on two main reasons we forget information from our Long-Term Memory (LTM): Interference and Retrieval Failure.

1. Interference Theory

The basic idea of Interference is that forgetting happens because memories get mixed up with or "disrupted" by other memories. This usually happens when we are trying to remember two pieces of information that are very similar (like two different phone numbers or two similar French verbs).

There are two types you need to know:

A. Proactive Interference

This occurs when old memories disrupt the retrieval of new memories.
Think of "Pro" as "Forward"—the old memory is moving forward to interfere with the new one.

  • Example: You get a new bank card with a new PIN. When you go to the ATM, you accidentally type in your old PIN. The old memory is interfering with your ability to remember the new one.

B. Retroactive Interference

This occurs when new memories disrupt the retrieval of old memories.
Think of "Retro" as "Backward"—the new memory is moving backward to interfere with the old one.

  • Example: You start learning Spanish this year. When you try to remember the French words you learned last year, you can only think of the Spanish ones. The new memory is interfering with the old one.
Memory Aid: The "PORN" Mnemonic

Students often find this acronym helpful to remember which is which:

  • Proactive = Old interferes with new.
  • Retroactive = New interferes with old.

Quick Review: Interference is most likely to happen when the two pieces of information are similar. If you are learning Math and then go to a Hip-Hop dance class, you are unlikely to experience interference because the tasks are so different!


2. Retrieval Failure

Have you ever had a word on the "tip of your tongue"? You know you know it, but you just can't grab it. This is Retrieval Failure. According to this explanation, the memory is still there in your brain, but you have forgotten the cues (reminders) needed to access it.

The Encoding Specificity Principle suggests that if a cue is going to help us remember, it must be present at the time of encoding (learning) and at the time of retrieval (remembering).

There are two main types of cue-dependent forgetting:

A. Context-Dependent Forgetting

This happens when forgetting occurs because the external environment (the context) is different during retrieval than it was during learning.

  • The Concept: If you learn something in a classroom but try to remember it while sitting at the beach, you might struggle because the "cues" of the classroom (the smell of whiteboards, the sound of the ticking clock) are missing.
  • Real-world application: This is why some students find it helpful to take exams in the same room where they had their lessons.

B. State-Dependent Forgetting

This happens when forgetting occurs because your internal state (how you feel physically or emotionally) is different during retrieval than it was during learning.

  • The Concept: Your internal "state" acts as a cue. This includes being happy, sad, tired, or even under the influence of caffeine.
  • Example: If you learn a list of words while you are feeling very happy, you are more likely to remember them later if you are in a happy mood again. If you try to remember them while you are sad, you might experience retrieval failure.

Research has shown that divers who learned a list of words underwater remembered them better when tested underwater than when tested on land! The environment acted as a powerful "context cue."


Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mixing up Proactive and Retroactive: Always double-check! Ask yourself: "Which memory is being forgotten?" If the new one is gone, it's Proactive. If the old one is gone, it's Retroactive.
  • Thinking the memory is "deleted": In Retrieval Failure, the memory isn't gone; it's just "locked." You just need the right key (the cue) to open it.
  • Confusing "Context" and "State": Remember: Context is outside you (the room, the weather); State is inside you (mood, tiredness).
