Introduction to Non-Experimental and Qualitative Methods

In Psychology, we don't always put people in a lab and change variables to see what happens. Sometimes, the most powerful way to understand human behavior is simply to watch, listen, and ask. This is where non-experimental methods come in! These methods help us explore the "how" and "why" of behavior in real-world settings. Whether you are an SL or HL student, mastering these methods is essential because you will use them in your class practicals and your Internal Assessment (IA) proposal.

Don't worry if this seems like a lot of terminology at first. Think of these methods as different tools in a detective's kit—each one is best suited for a specific type of mystery!


1. Interviews and Focus Groups

Interviews are a way of collecting data by talking directly to participants. In the IB curriculum, these are specifically linked to the context of Health and Well-being.

Types of Interviews

A. Structured Interviews: These use a fixed set of questions in a specific order. It’s like a verbal survey. Example: Asking everyone exactly the same five questions about their sleep habits.

B. Semi-structured Interviews: These have a set of prepared questions (an interview guide), but the researcher is free to ask follow-up questions based on what the participant says. This is very common in psychology because it allows for flexibility. Example: You ask about stress, and the participant mentions their job; you then ask more about their workplace environment even though it wasn't on your original list.

C. Focus Groups: This is a group interview (usually \( 3 \) to \( 8 \) participants) where a moderator leads a discussion. Key Advantage: Participants interact with each other, which can reveal more than a one-on-one conversation would. It’s like a group brainstorm about a specific topic.

2. Observational Research

The Three Dimensions of Observation

1. Naturalistic vs. Controlled: - Naturalistic: Watching behavior in its "real life" environment (like a playground). - Controlled: Watching behavior in a set-up environment (like a play laboratory).

2. Overt vs. Covert: - Overt: Participants know they are being watched. - Covert: Participants do not know they are being watched (the researcher might be hidden or using a camera).

3. Participant vs. Non-participant: - Participant: The researcher joins the group they are studying to get an "insider" perspective. - Non-participant: The researcher stays separate from the group and just watches from the outside.

Common Mistake to Avoid: Don't confuse "Naturalistic" with "Participant." You can be a participant in a controlled setting, or a non-participant in a natural setting!

3. Surveys and Questionnaires

In the IB Psychology guide, the terms survey and questionnaire are used interchangeably. These are primarily used to collect data from larger groups of people and are linked to the context of Human Relationships.

Surveys often use two types of questions: - Closed questions: These provide a set of answers to choose from (like "Yes/No" or a scale of 1-10). These are easier to turn into numbers (quantitative data). - Open questions: These allow participants to write whatever they want. These provide "rich" data (qualitative data).

Did you know? Surveys are great for discovering correlations (relationships between two things), but they can't prove that one thing caused another. That's a key concept called causality.

4. Qualitative vs. Quantitative Data

While some non-experimental methods can produce numbers, they are often used to collect qualitative data. It is important to understand the difference:

Qualitative Data: Focuses on descriptions, meanings, and experiences. It's about "words." It provides depth and richness. Analogy: Reading a detailed diary entry about someone's feelings.

Quantitative Data: Focuses on numbers, scales, and frequencies. It's about "how much" or "how many." Analogy: Looking at a graph of someone's heart rate over an hour.

5. Important Concepts in Non-Experimental Research

When you are designing your research proposal (your IA), you need to think about these three big ideas:

Bias: This is when the researcher’s own expectations or the participant’s behavior (like trying to look "good") influences the results. For example, in an overt observation, people might act differently because they know they are being watched!

Credibility: Since qualitative research is more subjective, we ask: "Do the results actually reflect the reality of the participants?" We ensure credibility by being honest about our methods and sometimes checking our findings with the participants themselves.

Generalization: In non-experimental research (especially with small samples), it can be hard to say the results apply to everyone. We focus more on whether the findings might apply to a similar population of interest in a similar setting.
