Introduction to Writing a Research Proposal
Welcome! In the new IB Psychology syllabus (starting with the 2027 exams), your Internal Assessment (IA) has a fresh focus. Instead of carrying out a full experiment and writing up the results, you will now design a research proposal. This means you will create a detailed "blueprint" or "plan" for a study you would conduct, without actually having to collect the data.
Think of it like an architect drawing the plans for a skyscraper. You won't be laying the bricks yourself, but your drawings must be so precise and logical that someone else could build the tower perfectly just by following your instructions. This chapter will guide you through the essential steps of writing a proposal that is rigorous, ethical, and psychologically sound.
1. What is the Research Proposal?
The research proposal is your Internal Assessment (IA). It is worth 24 marks and is expected to take about 20 hours of class time. The goal is to demonstrate your ability to apply psychological concepts, content, and methodology to a specific area of interest.
Crucial Rule: Your proposal must use one of the four research methods you practiced during your class practicals. You cannot choose a random method; it must be one of these:
- Interview (Structured, semi-structured, or focus group).
- Observation (Naturalistic, controlled, participant, etc.).
- Survey/Questionnaire.
- Experiment (True or quasi-experiment).
Don't worry if this seems tricky at first! The key is to match your research question to the method that best helps you answer it.
2. The Components of a Proposal
To get those 24 marks, your proposal needs to be comprehensive. While the structure can vary, a high-quality proposal usually includes the following sections:
A. The Research Question and Aim

B. Choice of Method
You must justify why you chose your specific method (Experiment, Survey, Observation, or Interview). You should explain why this method is the most appropriate way to investigate your chosen context (Health and well-being, Human development, Human relationships, or Learning and cognition).
C. Integration of Concepts
In the new syllabus, concepts are the stars of the show. Your proposal should reflect one or more of the six core concepts:
- Bias: How will you ensure your own expectations don't ruin the data?
- Causality: Are you trying to find a cause-and-effect link?
- Change: Are you looking at how behavior develops over time?
- Measurement: How exactly will you "score" or "record" a human emotion or behavior?
- Perspective: Are you looking at the behavior from a biological, cognitive, or sociocultural viewpoint?
- Responsibility: How are you protecting your participants?
Quick Review: A proposal is a plan, not a report. You explain what you plan to do and why it is the best way to do it.
3. Defining the Population of Interest
In your proposal, you must be very specific about who you are studying. This is called your population of interest. You can't just say "people"; you need to be more precise, such as "Grade 11 students in international schools" or "First-time parents living in urban areas."

Remember, for the proposal, you must stick to the minimum sample sizes required in the class practicals (e.g., \(n = 10\) for a survey, or \(n = 5\) for an experiment).
4. Ethical Considerations: The "Safety First" Rule
Since you aren't actually conducting the research, you might think ethics don't matter. Actually, they matter more than ever! You must prove to the examiner that your proposed study is safe and "responsible" (one of our key concepts).
In your proposal, you must explain how you would handle:
- Informed Consent: How will you explain the study so people can agree to join?
- Anonymity: How will you keep their names and data private?
- Right to Withdraw: How will you make sure they know they can leave at any time?
- Debriefing: How will you explain the true aim of the study after it's over?
Did you know? If a research proposal is deemed ethically "high risk" without proper safeguards, it cannot receive high marks. Always put the well-being of your (hypothetical) participants first!
5. Step-by-Step: How to Design Your Proposal
Follow these steps to build your proposal from the ground up:
Step 1: Pick a Context. Choose one of the four: Health and well-being, Human development, Human relationships, or Learning and cognition.
Step 2: Match the Method. Use the method prescribed for that context (e.g., if you choose Learning and cognition, you must propose an experiment).
Step 3: State the Aim. What exactly do you want to find out about your population of interest?
Step 4: Explain the Procedure. Write a "recipe" for the study. What would the participants do? What would the researcher do? Be so specific that a stranger could follow your steps.
Step 5: Address Bias and Credibility. Discuss what might go wrong. For example, if you are proposing an interview, how will you avoid researcher bias?
6. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Don't fall into these common traps:
- Collecting Data: Stop! Do not actually give out the survey or run the experiment. The IB only wants the proposal.
- Being Vague: Avoid phrases like "I will ask them some questions." Instead, say "I will use a semi-structured interview consisting of six open-ended questions regarding..."
- Ignoring the Concepts: Ensure you use the specific terminology of the six concepts (Bias, Causality, etc.) to show you understand the framework of the course.
- Incorrect Method: Ensure the method you propose matches the context you chose, just like in your class practicals.
