N2 主張理解(長文): The 900-Character Opinion Piece
主張理解(しゅちょうりかい, thematic comprehension)is N2's long-form boss: a ~900-character opinion essay — a columnist's argument with personal color — and 3 questions climaxing in 筆者が最も言いたいこと (the writer's central claim). Everything you've built converges here: paragraph-job labeling, the concede-then-override wave, modality ranking, referent technique. This chapter assembles it into the long-form protocol.
1. The Anatomy of a 主張 Essay
Nine hundred characters ≈ 5-6 paragraphs, almost always shaped like this:
- Hook — an episode, a news item, a common saying.
- Common view — 「〜と言われる」「多くの人は〜と考える」(the position to be revised).
- Concession — たしかに、もちろん (granting the common view its due).
- The turn — しかし/だが/ところが (the essay's hinge).
- The writer's case — reasons, an example, perhaps a further もっとも retreat.
- The claim, restated — final paragraph, wearing
The three questions map onto this: an early detail/referent question (zones 1-2), a mid logic question (why does the writer say X?), and the claim question (zones 4-6). Label the joints during the read — 「たしかに」 and 「しかし」 deserve actual pencil marks.
2. The Claim-Question Protocol
- Re-read the final paragraph AND the first sentence after the main
- Formulate the claim in YOUR words before viewing options (the echo-trap vaccine).
- Eliminate: the conceded common view (always present as an option), the over-generalized example, the half-claim (right topic, wrong stance strength), and the invented moral.
- The correct option paraphrases; it is general (not episode-level); its modality matches the text's (べきだ→should; のではないか→the writer suggests).
3. Worked Skeleton (Compressed Simulation)
Claim question:
Walkthrough: ① is the concession (たしかに-zone); ② is the supporting report (実際-zone — evidence, not claim); ④ is the hook episode. ③ = the final paragraph's べきなのだ sentence, paraphrased. Answer ③. The four options ARE the essay's four zones — which is precisely why zone-labeling answers claim questions before the options finish loading.
4. Mid-Essay Question Types
- 「〜」とはどういうことか — decode a coined phrase (上手に休む技術): the text defines it nearby via つまり, examples, or contrast (休む=次によく働くための準備).
- なぜ筆者は〜と言うのか — the reasons live between the turn and the evidence; compress the paragraph, don't quote one clause.
- Referent questions — same backward-search + substitution as ever, now across paragraph boundaries.
5. Long-Form Time Discipline
- Budget ~11 minutes: 3.5 for the labeled read, ~2.5 per question.
- If time collapses, invert: read final paragraph + the しかし sentence, answer the claim question, then work backward for the details. The claim point is the most valuable and the most shortcut-able.
- Unknown words at 900 chars are guaranteed — skip any not inside a question window; the argument's joints (たしかに/しかし/実際/べきだ) are all N3-level words carrying N2 points.
Summary & Key Takeaways
900-char opinion essay, 3 questions, crowned by the claim question.
Mark the joints while reading.
- Claim protocol: own-words first; kill the concession, the evidence-report, the hook, and the modality-mismatched option.
- The four options usually equal the essay's four zones — zone-labeling IS the answer key.
- Emergency shortcut: final paragraph + しかし sentence → claim point banked.
