N4 Grammar Course, Part 1: The Conjugation Revolution
N4 is the level where Japanese verbs unlock their full machinery. At N5 you mastered four polite forms and the て/ない/た conversions; N4 hands you the potential ("can eat"), passive ("was praised"), causative ("made me eat"), volitional ("let's/I shall"), the four conditionals, and the famous giving-receiving triangle. The complete N4 list is ~136 points; this chapter covers Part A — the conjugation forms and the sentence machinery built directly on them. 文の文法2 covers Part B (て-form extensions, hearsay/appearance, and the rest).
How the exam tests this: 問題1 (13 items) — blanks with four near-forms. At N4 the distractors are usually the SAME verb in different conjugations, so form-building accuracy is the whole game.
1. The Potential Form: できる for Everything
| Group | Rule | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Group 1 | final -u → -eru | 書く→書ける, 飲む→飲める, 買う→買える |
| Group 2 | る→られる | 食べる→食べられる, 見る→見られる |
| Irregular | — | する→できる, 来る→来られる(こられる) |
- The object's particle prefers が: 漢字が読めます。(を also heard, but exams favor が)
- Alternative: dictionary form+ことができる — 漢字を読むことができます (more formal, same meaning).
- Meaning covers ability AND possibility: この店で切符が買えます (tickets can be bought here).
2. The Passive: 〜(ら)れる
| Group | Rule | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Group 1 | -u → -a + れる | 読む→読まれる, 言う→言われる |
| Group 2 | る→られる | ほめる→ほめられる |
| Irregular | — | する→される, 来る→来られる |
Two flavors, both tested:
- Direct passive: 先生にほめられました。(I was praised by the teacher — agent takes に.)
- Suffering passive (Japanese specialty — something happened TO you, and you're not happy): 雨に降られて、服がぬれた。(I got rained on.) 隣の人にたばこを吸われた。(The person next to me smoked — at my expense.)
⚠ The Group 2 collision: 食べられる = potential AND passive — identical forms! Context and particles decide: 私は納豆が食べられる (can eat); ケーキを弟に食べられた (eaten by — suffering!). The exam loves this ambiguity; look at who's marked with に and whether someone suffered.
3. The Causative: 〜(さ)せる
| Group | Rule | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Group 1 | -u → -a + せる | 行く→行かせる, 飲む→飲ませる |
| Group 2 | る→させる | 食べる→食べさせる |
| Irregular | — | する→させる, 来る→来させる |
- Make (force): 母は弟に野菜を食べさせた。(Mom made my brother eat vegetables.)
- Let (permit): 子どもを公園で遊ばせた。(Let the kids play.) — context separates make/let.
- The humble request built on it: 〜させてください "please let me": 今日は早く帰らせてください。 A guaranteed exam and real-life pattern.
And the double-decker causative-passive 〜させられる — "was made to do (unwillingly)": 母に部屋を掃除させられた。(I was made to clean my room.) Build it stepwise: 掃除する→させる→させられる. If the sentence smells of resentment toward an authority figure, this is your form.
4. The Volitional: 〜(よ)う
| Group | Rule | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Group 1 | -u → -ō | 行く→行こう, 飲む→飲もう |
| Group 2 | る→よう | 食べる→食べよう, 見る→見よう |
| Irregular | — | する→しよう, 来る→来よう(こよう) |
Plain "let's/shall I": もう遅いから、帰ろう。 Plus its N4 flagship pattern 〜(よ)うと思う "I'm thinking of doing": 週末は映画を見ようと思います。(Present intent — softer than 〜つもり.) Related commands: 〜なさい (parent/teacher command: 早く寝なさい) and prohibitive 〜な (blunt: 入るな).
5. The Four Conditionals: と・ば・たら・なら
The most-asked N4 question in classrooms — here's the working map:
| Form | Personality | Example | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| と | automatic law: whenever A, B always follows | 春になると、桜が咲く。/このボタンを押すと、ドアが開く。 | B can't be a request/command/invitation ✗押すと、開けてください |
| ば | logical hypothesis: IF A (focus on the condition) | 安ければ、買います。/分からなければ、聞いてください。 | formation: 買う→買えば, 高い→高ければ, する→すれば |
| たら | the all-rounder: if/when/after A happens | 駅に着いたら、電話してください。/雨が降ったら、中止です。 | widest use — when in doubt, たら is the safe answer |
| なら | contextual: if we're talking about A / if it's A you mean | 京都へ行くなら、秋がいいですよ。 | reacts to what someone said; advice about their topic |
The exam's classic contrasts: と for natural results (vending machines, seasons); なら uniquely allows the ADVICE-about-your-plan meaning (行くなら…がいい); たら handles sequences ("when you arrive"). If B is a command/request, と dies; if A is the other person's stated plan, なら shines.
6. Giving & Receiving: The Triangle
Three verbs, three camera angles on one favor. First the object versions, then the て-form versions that dominate N4:
| Verb | Angle | Example |
|---|---|---|
| あげる | I/we give outward (or A gives B) | 友達に本を貸してあげました。(I did the lending FOR my friend.) |
| くれる | someone gives INWARD to me/us | 姉が宿題を手伝ってくれた。(My sister kindly helped ME.) |
| もらう | I/we receive; subject = receiver | 先生に作文を直してもらいました。(I got the teacher to correct it.) |
- The direction test: does the favor flow toward the speaker's side? → くれる/もらう. Away? → あげる. The subject of もらう is the RECEIVER; the subject of くれる is the GIVER.
- Casual downward: 〜てやる (to pets, plants, little siblings): 犬にえさを買ってやった。
- The polite request champion: 〜ていただけませんか "could you kindly…": もう一度説明していただけませんか。(いただく = humble もらう.)
- Gratitude formula: 〜てくれてありがとう — 手伝ってくれてありがとう。
Exam bait: swapping くれる/あげる viewpoints — 友達が私に本を貸して(あげた✗/くれた○). Anything arriving at "me" must be くれる/もらう.
7. Transitive & Intransitive Pairs (他動詞・自動詞)
N4 formalizes the pair system you met in vocabulary: someone does it (を+他動詞) vs it happens (が+自動詞).
| を+他動詞 (do) | が+自動詞 (happen) |
|---|---|
| 開ける (open it) | 開く (it opens) |
| 閉める | 閉まる |
| つける | つく |
| 消す | 消える |
| 始める | 始まる |
| 止める (stop it) | 止まる (it stops) |
| 入れる | 入る |
| 出す | 出る |
| 落とす (drop) | 落ちる (fall) |
| 壊す (break it) | 壊れる (it breaks) |
| 直す (fix) | 直る (get fixed) |
| 見つける (find) | 見つかる (be found) |
| 決める (decide) | 決まる (be decided) |
| 変える (change it) | 変わる (it changes) |
Combined with aspect, this yields the three-way contrast the exam adores: 窓を開けます (I open it) / 窓が開いています (it stands open) / 窓が開けてあります (someone opened it on purpose and left it so — more in Part B). Particle before the blank → verb family; who's acting → transitivity.
8. Duty & Necessity (Consolidated)
N5 gave you the must-quartet; N4 owns the canonical pair 〜なければいけない/〜なければならない: もう帰らなければなりません。 Casual contractions to RECOGNIZE (they star in listening): 〜なきゃ (帰らなきゃ), 〜なくちゃ (行かなくちゃ). Plus 〜必要がある (formal): 早めに予約する必要があります。
9. How the Exam Tests Part A — Worked Examples
子どものとき、母に毎日ピアノを( )。
① 練習しました ② 練習させました ③ 練習させられました ④ 練習されました → ③: forced by mom + resentment = causative-passive.
この字は小さくて( )にくいです。
① 読む ② 読み ③ 読んで ④ 読ま → ②: stem+にくい (Part B pattern, but the connection rule is the point: ます-stem!).
母の日に、娘が晩ご飯を作って( )。
① あげました ② くれました ③ もらいました ④ やりました → ②: the favor flows INTO the family/speaker; subject is the giver (daughter).
Summary & Key Takeaways
- N4 Part A = the conjugation revolution: potential (書ける/food が), passive (direct + suffering: 雨に降られた), causative (make/let + させてください), causative-passive させられる (forced & unhappy), volitional (行こう+ようと思う).
- Group 2 trap: られる = potential AND passive — particles and suffering decide.
- Conditionals: と (automatic law, no commands after), ば (logical if), たら (all-rounder), なら (advice on your topic).
- Giving-receiving triangle: あげる outward, くれる inward, もらう = receiver as subject; politest request = 〜ていただけませんか.
- Transitivity pairs: を+他動詞 vs が+自動詞 (開ける/開く…) — particle before the blank decides.
- Duty: なければいけない/ならない; recognize なきゃ/なくちゃ in listening.
