N5 ポイント理解: One Question, One Target
ポイント理解(comprehension of key points — 6 items)flips the listening challenge: the question is announced first, you get a few seconds to read the printed options, and then the conversation plays. You are not asked to understand everything — only to catch ONE point: when, where, who, why, which one, how much. This is selective listening, and it is trainable to near-perfection at N5. This chapter shows you how to weaponize the head start, category by category.
1. The Format, Exactly
- Situation line: 女の人と男の人が話しています。
- The question plays first: 女の人はいつ映画を見ますか。("When will the woman see the movie?")
- A short pause — you read the 4 printed options (e.g., 月曜日/水曜日/土曜日/日曜日).
- Conversation (~30-40 seconds), question repeats, you answer.
The question first + printed options = you know the target AND the candidate answers before a word of dialogue plays. Used well, this is the easiest listening block on the paper. Wasted, the conversation drowns you in dates and names you had no reason to sort.
2. The Head-Start Ritual (Every Single Item)
- Catch the question word — いつ/どこ/だれ/どうして/どれ/いくら/何時 — and the subject: is it the woman or the man being asked about? (Half the traps are "right answer, wrong person.")
- Read all 4 options and say them silently in Japanese. Options are your prediction sheet: four days of the week? Then the dialogue will juggle days, and you tick them off as they're mentioned.
- Track with your pencil: mark options as the audio addresses them — ✗ for rejected, ○ for chosen. The dialogue almost always mentions 3 of the 4 options; the marks keep your memory honest.
3. Category Playbook
いつ/何時 (when) — the most common target
Expect a negotiation: 土曜日はどうですか。— 土曜日はちょっと…。じゃあ、日曜日は?— いいですね。 Answer: Sunday. The machinery: ちょっと… is a full "no" in Japanese; じゃあ introduces the counter-proposal; agreement sounds like いいですね/そうしましょう. Also drill time arithmetic: 映画は3時からです。30分前に会いましょう → they meet at 2:30 — the answer is computed, never spoken.
どこ (where)
Places tour through the dialogue (駅の前?喫茶店?図書館?). The final agreed place follows the same じゃあ→いいですね melody. Watch for location changes: いつもの喫茶店は休みだから… (the usual café is closed, so…) — closure/complication vocabulary reroutes the answer.
だれ (who)
Family and people terms get tested inside: 兄/弟/姉/妹 (whose age order matters!), 友だち, 先生, 会社の人. Trap: the dialogue mentions people who can't come: 父は仕事ですから来ません — ✗ that option.
どうして (why)
Listen for から/ので clauses: 頭が痛かったから. The bait: earlier reasons that get corrected — 雨だから?いいえ、雨はだいじょうぶです。時間がないんです。 Final reason wins, same verdict logic as 課題理解.
どれ/どの~ (which one)
Descriptions pile up: 大きくて、白いかばんです。黒いのじゃありません。 Track adjectives cumulatively — the answer satisfies ALL mentioned properties, and the negated one (黒くない) kills its option.
いくら (how much)
Prices bounce: このりんごは一つ百円。三つ買います → 三百円. Or discounts: 五百円ですが、今日は百円安いです → 四百円. One arithmetic step is standard — pencil, not mental juggling.
4. Full Worked Script
= rejected(✗①). Saturday proposed; Saturday daytime = shopping(✗② — mentioned but occupied!); Saturday night = だいじょうぶ → じゃあ…会いましょう → そうしましょう = verdict. Answer ③. Every option except ④ was spoken aloud — the pencil-tracking ritual is what keeps them straight.
5. The Sound Traps at N5
- Refusal melodies that contain no "no": ちょっと…/うーん…/すみません、その日は… — all mean rejected. If you wait for いいえ, you'll never hear it.
- だいじょうぶ ambiguity: 夜はだいじょうぶです = night works (yes); お茶はだいじょうぶです in a shop = no thanks. Context decides — at N5 listening it's usually the "available/fine" meaning.
- Similar-sounding numbers: 一時(いちじ)vs 七時(しちじ), 四日(よっか)vs 八日(ようか), 十日(とおか)vs 二十日(はつか). When options are numbers, pre-say all four aloud in your head — priming your ear beats hoping.
- もう vs まだ and positive vs negative endings — the last syllable of the key sentence flips everything: 行きます/行きません.
6. Training Routine
- Prediction drills: take any N5 listening item, read ONLY the options, and guess the dialogue's topic and vocabulary before playing. This trains the head-start ritual until automatic.
- Number bootcamp: 10 minutes of random times/dates/prices dictation weekly (say them, write them, check). N5 listening is ~40% numbers by weight.
- One-listen discipline: practice always answering after a single play — the real exam gives no second chance, and your practice must match.
Summary & Key Takeaways
- ポイント理解 (6 items): question ANNOUNCED FIRST, options printed — selective listening for one target: いつ・どこ・だれ・どうして・どれ・いくら.
- Head-start ritual: catch question word + person → pre-read and silently pronounce all options → pencil-track ✗/○ as the audio addresses them.
- Negotiation melody: proposal → ちょっと…(=no)→ じゃあ+counter-proposal → そうしましょう(=verdict). Final agreement wins.
- Expect one arithmetic step for times and prices; compute on paper.
- Ear traps: しちじ/いちじ, よっか/ようか, refusals without いいえ, and the last-syllable polarity flip.
- Master the ritual and this is the highest-percentage block in the Listening section.
