N5 即時応答: The Two-Second Reply

即時応答(そくじおうとう, quick response — 6 items)is the sprint at the end of the Listening section: you hear ONE short line — a question, a greeting, a remark — and immediately choose the natural reply from 3 spoken options. Nothing is printed. No thinking time. This question rewards exactly one thing: having Japanese's question-answer pairs wired as reflexes. This chapter installs those reflexes: the reply catalog, the machinery of answering (including the infamous negative-question flip), and the pacing discipline that keeps one missed item from sinking three.

1. The Format, Exactly

Audio: お国はどちらですか。
① タイから来ました。 ② タイへ行きたいです。 ③ タイ料理が好きです。

Answer ①: "where are you from?" → "I'm from Thailand." Both distractors recycle the topic word (タイ) with the wrong function — the standard recipe. Items arrive every ~10 seconds; answer, release, reset.

2. The Machinery of Answering

Question word → answer type (instant mapping)

You hearReply must containExample pair
いつ~?a timeいつ来ましたか。→ 先週来ました。
どこ/どちら~?a placeトイレはどこですか。→ あそこです。
だれ~?a personだれと行きますか。→ 友だちと行きます。
何~?a thing/activity何を食べますか。→ うどんにします。
どうして~?~からどうして休みましたか。→ 頭が痛かったからです。
いくら~?a priceこれはいくらですか。→ 三百円です。
どうですか?an impression日本はどうですか。→ とても楽しいです。
どのぐらい~?duration/amountどのぐらい勉強しますか。→ 一時間ぐらいです。

Wrong options break the mapping (a place answering いつ), so catching just the question word already eliminates one or two options.

Yes/no questions — and the negative-question flip

The single most feared N5 listening trap: Japanese はい agrees with the sentence you heard, not with the facts as English "yes" does.

あした、来ませんか。(Won't you come tomorrow? = invitation) → はい、行きます。(Yes, I'll come!)
まだ食べていませんか。(You haven't eaten yet?) → はい、まだです。("Correct — not yet.") / いいえ、もう食べました。("No — I already ate.")

Rules of survival: (1) 〜ませんか with rising invitation melody = "won't you ~" → answer like an invitation (いいですね/すみません、ちょっと…). (2) A true negative question gets はい = "your negative statement is right", いいえ = "it's wrong." Drill the pair はい、まだです/いいえ、もうしました until it feels native.

ServeReturn
(or simply いいえ)
週末、何をしましたか。友だちと買い物をしました。

Requests, offers & invitations → the three natural responses

  • Request (〜てください/〜おねがいします) → はい、わかりました。/はい、いいですよ。
  • Offer (〜ましょうか) → accept: ありがとうございます、おねがいします。 decline: だいじょうぶです、ありがとうございます。
  • Invitation (〜ませんか) → accept: いいですね、ぜひ。 decline: すみません、その日はちょっと…。

3. The Distractor Recipes

  1. Topic echo, wrong function — repeats the keyword in the wrong speech act (the タイ example above). Beat it with question-word mapping.
  2. Role reversal — the reply the FIRST speaker would say next: いってきます → ✗ いってきます (echo), ○ いってらっしゃい. Fixed pairs beat this.
  3. Polarity confusion — answers to negative questions with English-style yes/no. Beat it with はい=you're right, いいえ=you're wrong.
  4. Sound-alike bait — かえます/かえります, きます(来る)/きます(着る), いちじ/しちじ. Beat with context: 何時に来ますか can only take a time.

4. Worked Examples

Audio: すみません、この電車は東京へ行きますか。
① はい、どうぞ。 ② いいえ、行きません。次の電車ですよ。 ③ 東京はにぎやかですね。
— a yes/no question about the train needs a yes/no + info; ① answers a request, ③ is small talk (topic echo).

Audio: 荷物、持ちましょうか。
① はい、持ちます。 ② すみません、おねがいします。 ③ どういたしまして。
— accepting an offer. ① reverses roles (the offerer carries, not you), ③ replies to thanks that haven't happened yet.

5. Pacing: The Anti-Spiral Discipline

  • Two-second rule: if the answer isn't there in two seconds, pick your best surviving option, mark it, and let go. The next item starts immediately; lingering on one costs the next two.
  • Between items, empty your head — no post-mortems. 即時応答 is six independent sprints, not one race.
  • The final trap is fatigue: this block ends the exam. Train endurance by doing your practice sets at the END of study sessions, not the fresh start.

6. Training Routine

  • Turn section 2's tables into audio flashcards: hear the serve, say the return aloud before flipping. Speaking speed = recognition speed.
  • Get a partner (or app) to fire random greetings/questions at you for 3 minutes daily — the "reflex gym."
  • Drill the negative-question flip 10 times in a row until はい、まだです comes out without translation. It's one habit, and it's worth a guaranteed point.

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • 即時応答 (6 items): one spoken line → choose the natural reply from 3 audio options, instantly.
  • Question-word mapping (いつ→time, どこ→place, どうして→〜から…) kills wrong-function options on contact.
  • Negative questions: はい confirms the negative ("right, not yet"), いいえ overturns it ("no, I already did") — the anti-English flip.
  • Fixed pairs are free points: ただいま⇄おかえりなさい, ありがとう⇄どういたしまして, おさきに⇄おつかれさま.
  • Offers/invitations have three-note replies: accept warmly, or decline with すみません、ちょっと….
  • Two-second rule + head-emptying between items — never let one miss become three. 以上、N5聴解コンプリート!
