Assessment Unit AS 3: Fieldwork Skills and Techniques in Geography consists of two compulsory questions totaling 60 marks over 1 hour (1 mark per minute). Question 1 directly interrogates the candidate’s submitted Fieldwork Statement and Table of Data, whereas Question 2 presents resource-based scenarios assessing general fieldwork methodology, statistical computation, and graphical/cartographic presentation.

Where the Marks Are Won and Lost

In Question 1, top-band marks demand genuine specificity and synthesis:

  • Risk Assessment (1a): Candidates must explicitly distinguish between the four stages (Hazard, Risk, Avoidance Strategy, and Contingency Planning) rather than conflating avoidance with contingency.
  • Statistical Application & Geographical Reasoning (1c): Candidates must execute a rigorous statistical test on their own data (e.g. Spearman’s Rank or Central Tendency) and critically explain the outcome using relevant geographical theory and models rather than mere numerical narrative. Quality of Written Communication (QWC) is formally assessed here and in 1(b).
  • Methodology & Extension (1b, 1d): Precision regarding field equipment, sample size, laboratory procedures (if applicable), and realistic extensions is required.

In Question 2, accuracy in calculation and cartography is paramount:

  • Nearest Neighbour Analysis (2b): Accurate execution of the formula \( Rn = 2\bar{d}\sqrt{\frac{n}{A}} \) followed by correct hypothesis evaluation using the critical significance graph.
  • Cartographic Rules (2c): When constructing choropleth keys, categories must be mutually exclusive without overlapping boundaries or gaps, arranged strictly from dark (high values) to light (low values).
  • Sampling & Apparatus (2a, 2c): Clear theoretical definitions of stratified sampling and quadrat sizing based on vegetation scale.

Exam Strategy & Preparation Advice

Familiarise yourself intimately with your submitted fieldwork data before entering the exam room. Ensure you can perform Spearman’s rank or Nearest Neighbour calculations fluently under timed conditions. In cartographic tasks, use a sharp pencil and ruler to guarantee neat, unambiguous shading that perfectly aligns with your designated category boundaries.
