Assessment Suite Overview

The 2023 CCEA GCE AS Health and Social Care examination series assesses core competency across three key units: AS 3 (Health and Well-being), AS 5 (Adult Service Users), and AS 7 (Physiology of Health and Illness). Each examination is structured as a 2-hour, 100-mark paper consisting of three substantial compulsory structured questions grounded in realistic health, social care, or early years scenarios.

Where the Marks Are Distributed

  • Low-Tariff Foundations (1–3 marks): Point-marked recall items testing key definitions (e.g., disease, empowerment, adults in need of protection), anatomical labeling (organelles, motor neurone, digestive tract), and identification of stages/organisations.
  • Medium-Tariff Descriptions & Explanations (3–9 marks): Detailed application of concepts to scenarios, such as explaining the reablement model versus traditional domiciliary care, synaptic transmission, and behavioural impacts on health.
  • High-Tariff Extended Evaluations & Analyses (9–12 marks): Level-of-response essays assessing synoptic depth, balanced arguments, and Quality of Written Communication (QWC), notably in assessing the holistic impacts of long-term conditions (diabetes, stroke) and management strategies in care settings.

Key Examiner Pitfalls & Areas of Mark Loss

In extended response 12-mark questions, candidates frequently limit their attainment to Level 2 (maximum 8 marks) by producing unbalanced discussions that address only one or two required dimensions (such as focusing entirely on physical impacts while neglecting psychological or social well-being). In physiology components, vague descriptions of biological mechanisms—such as omitting neurotransmitter diffusion across the synaptic cleft or failing to mention pancreatic beta cell destruction in type 1 diabetes—severely restrict high-band marks.

Preparation Strategy

Focus revision on mastering explicit multi-part framework responses (PIES: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Social) and practicing 12-mark essay planning to ensure equal coverage across all requested facets. Accurate anatomical nomenclature and thorough familiarity with statutory frameworks (e.g., Bengoa Report Triple Aim) are paramount for top-band achievement.
