Overview of the 2025 Examination Series

The 2025 CCEA AS Nutrition and Food Science series comprises two units: AS 1 (Principles of Nutrition) and AS 2 (Diet, Lifestyle and Health), each allocated 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks. The papers test across Assessment Objectives AO1 (knowledge and recall), AO2 (application and explanation), and AO3 (synthesis, justification, and evaluation), with Quality of Written Communication (QWC) heavily weighted in extended-response questions.

Mark Allocation and High-Yield Topics

In AS 1, macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, fats) and fluid balance form the core of compulsory Section A (56 marks), featuring structural fatty acid identification, amino acid classification, and hydration requirements in vulnerable populations. Section B provides choice across lifecycle nutrition (adult male requirements), micronutrient bioavailability (iron absorption), and dietary standards (DRVs/EARs).

In AS 2, Section A focuses on foundational health concepts including physical activity guidelines, energy balance, Type 2 diabetes prevention, and food labelling barriers. Section B tests in-depth epidemiological and biochemical understanding across non-communicable diseases—specifically cancer etiology, childhood obesity drivers, alcohol-induced nutrient malabsorption, and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Examiner Pitfalls and Guidance

  • Vague Physiological Mechanisms: Students often state what happens without detailing the how. For instance, in lipid metabolism or iron absorption, naming phytates or polyphenols must be paired with explanation of insoluble complex formation and chelation.
  • Superficial Extended Responses: In 12-mark and 15-mark questions, Level 4 performance requires succinct structure, accurate terminology (e.g. transamination, rhodopsin, dilutional hyponatraemia, atherosclerosis), and quantified recommendations (e.g. 70 g red meat ceiling, 14 units alcohol limit, 35% total fat limit).
  • Question Choice Strategy: Candidates should choose Section B essays where they can provide concrete dietary examples linked directly to metabolic consequences rather than general lifestyle statements.
