CCEA GCSE Economics Assessment Overview

The GCSE Economics examination comprises two distinct papers: Paper 1 (G9281), weighted at 90 marks over 1 hour 45 minutes, covering core micro and macro principles with a choice of extended essay in Section C; and Paper 2 (G9282), weighted at 60 marks over 1 hour 15 minutes, focusing on Financial Capability and the Global Economy.

Where the Marks Are Won

Success in this examination rests heavily on three pillars:

  • Precise Definitions & Quantitative Accuracy: Short-answer questions (such as calculating PES, calculating Apple’s iPhone revenue share, or defining opportunity cost) provide straightforward baseline marks if standard formulas and accurate units (e.g. billions) are presented.
  • Step-by-Step Economic Transmission: Middle-tariff questions (4 to 8 marks) demand complete logical chains. For instance, explaining how monetary policy reduces inflation requires candidates to explicitly link rising base interest rates to higher borrowing costs, lower consumer spending and investment, a decrease in aggregate demand, and easing upward price pressure.
  • Balanced Evaluation in Extended Responses: 10-mark and 15-mark questions in Sections B and C use level-of-response mark schemes rewarding balanced viewpoints, practical context (such as UK or Northern Ireland local examples), and well-reasoned judgements.

Common Examiner Pitfalls

Examiners routinely highlight areas where candidates drop unnecessary marks:

  • Failing to Quote Data: In trend-description questions (e.g. global temperature changes or UK inflation trends), candidates frequently state general trajectories without quoting initial, peak, and final figures.
  • One-Sided Essay Responses: On 10-mark and 15-mark prompts (e.g. discussing tariffs or evaluating competition), presenting only benefits without examining costs or unintended consequences caps marks in Level 2.
  • Confusing Terminology: Misidentifying direct vs indirect taxation burdens or confusing private costs with external/social costs in market failure questions.

Strategic Revision & Exam Technique

Allocate roughly 1.15 minutes per mark. Ensure diagrams (like supply shifts under subsidies or PPF shifts) are fully labeled with axes, curves, and equilibrium shifts \( (P_1 \to P_2, Q_1 \to Q_2) \). For Section C in Paper 1, select the essay topic where you can most confidently develop multi-perspective analysis and substantiated real-world conclusions.
