Difficulty Verdict
This series sits firmly at a Level 4 difficulty. While Paper 13 presented accessible definitions, candidates struggled to score high marks on evaluation and application. Paper 23 required robust calculations and deep contextual awareness for the rug manufacturing business, 'Regency Rugs' (RR).
Where the Marks Are Won
High-scoring candidates secured easy marks on numerical components. In Paper 13, calculating X and Y in the cash flow forecast was highly accessible. In Paper 23, calculating Gross Profit Margin (GPM) and Profit Margin for 2021 and 2022 allowed top-tier students to secure clear Level 2 and Level 3 marks. Specifically, GPM fell from \( 60\% \) to \( 50\% \), while the overall Profit Margin increased from \( 20\% \) to \( 25\% \), showing outstanding cost of expense control but rising cost of sales.
Examiner Pitfalls & Misconceptions
- Profit vs. Cash Flow: Many candidates incorrectly discussed 'funding expansion' as a reason to manage cash flow. Cash flow is strictly for meeting day-to-day liabilities, not reinvestment.
- Lack of Business Context: For TDG (a bicycle retailer), candidates frequently discussed 'raw materials' and 'factory production lines'—which are completely irrelevant for a retail business.
- Mirror Arguments: Discussing the advantages of training as being 'highly motivated' and then arguing that the disadvantage of new technology is 'low motivation' was penalised as repetitive.
Preparation Strategy
Focus on learning precise definitions of terms like mass market and span of control. Avoid simply reordering words (e.g., defining span of control as 'how you control your span'). Furthermore, always write down your formulas and step-by-step working for any accounting calculation. If an essay question asks you to choose between two methods, explicitly justify why you rejected the alternative.
Future Predictions
Topics such as Break-even analysis, Balance Sheets (Statement of Financial Position), and Motivation Theories (e.g., Herzberg or Taylor) did not feature heavily in this series and are highly overdue for upcoming examinations.
