Difficulty Verdict
The January 2025 series for IAL Psychology presents a moderately challenging hurdle for students, primarily due to the heavy integration of Research Methods (AO2/AO3 skills) and complex mathematical calculations across both Unit 1 and Unit 2. While the recall elements of core theories (such as the Multi-Store Model and Social Learning Theory) are accessible, the application and extended evaluation questions demand high-level analytical skills.
Where the Marks Are
A staggering portion of the total credit across these units rests on Psychological Skills. Between statistical calculations (Spearman's Rank, ratios, percentages), drawing bar charts, and explaining practical investigation designs, students who treat research methods as a minor sub-topic will severely limit their grade potential. Additionally, high-mark essays (the 12-mark evaluation of Bartlett and the 16-mark synoptic essay on Benjamin's behaviour) make up a significant portion of the total paper weighting.
Examiner Pitfalls & Lost Marks
- Hypothesis Operationalisation: Students often lose easy marks by failing to operationalise both variables completely. Simply stating 'exercise' and 'sleep' is insufficient; they must specify 'average hours of exercise per week' and 'average hours of sleep per night'.
- Mathematical Rounding & Simplification: Ratios not converted to their lowest terms (e.g., in Q9b) or incomplete working out in the Spearman's rank table are common areas of dropped marks.
- Generic Essay Blocks: In the 16-marker (Q12) and 12-markers (Q11), candidates frequently copy-paste generic evaluation points without weaving in the specific details of the scenario (e.g., Benjamin's aggression at home versus at the theatre) or the specific methodology of the chosen study.
Success Strategy
To master upcoming series, students must treat mathematical skills as core psychology content. Practise manual calculation of standard statistics (mean, median, Spearman's Rank) and master the precise steps of statistical decision-making (comparing calculated values to critical value tables). For extended essays, practice the PEEL structure with a strict rule: every 'Point' must directly address the scenario character or study context.
Future Predictions
With Moscovici and Bartlett heavily featured in Unit 1, expect upcoming papers to pivot toward Milgram's variation studies or Sherif's Robbers Cave study. Similarly, because this series heavily leveraged Social Learning Theory and Freud's psychosexual stages, we predict a strong return of structured questions focusing on Classical Conditioning (Pavlov) and Operant Conditioning (Skinner) in the next cycle.
