Difficulty Verdict
The May 2025 Psychology Standard Level (SL) examination is rated as a 3 out of 5 (Moderate). While Section A of Paper 1 was very accessible, featuring highly predictable core questions, the essay prompts in Section B and Paper 2 demanded high levels of conceptual clarity and structured critical thinking. Students who relied on generic, pre-prepared essays struggled to access the highest mark bands, particularly where specific focus was requested (such as evaluating the studies themselves rather than the general theory).
Where the Marks Are
In Paper 1, the 27 marks in Section A represent the easiest path to securing a strong foundation. Excellent marks here depended on maintaining a 1:1 balance between explaining the psychological concept (e.g., intuitive thinking or social cognitive theory) and detailing one relevant study. In the 22-mark essays (Section B and Paper 2), the bulk of high-tier marks reside in Criterion D (Critical Thinking) and Criterion C (Use of Research). Candidates who deeply evaluated study methodologies—such as the limitations of fMRI scans in localization studies or longitudinal challenges in acculturation research—gained a significant edge.
Examiner Pitfalls & Misconceptions
According to the examiner reports, several recurrent mistakes cost students valuable marks:
- Failing to link animals to humans: When referencing animal studies (such as Harlow's monkeys for attachment or Rosenzweig's rats for brain development), many candidates forgot that these must be explicitly linked back to human behaviour. Without this connection, marks for research support were heavily capped.
- Listing over Evaluating: In Paper 1, Question 4 ('Evaluate one or more studies...'), many candidates evaluated the concept of localization of function rather than evaluating the empirical studies themselves (such as Maguire or HM).
- Mental vs. Physical Health in Option Options: In Paper 2 Health Psychology, candidates routinely confused mental disorders with physical health problems. Addressing depression without linking it to physical outcomes in a health-specific question resulted in automatic mark caps.
Revision Strategy & Prediction
For future series, students should prioritize a depth-over-breadth strategy for research studies. Instead of memorizing dozens of studies shallowly, master 2 to 3 robust studies per sub-topic. Given that localization of function and emotion & cognition were heavily featured in this paper, upcoming exams are highly likely to pivot toward neuroplasticity, neurotransmitters, and models of memory (specifically working memory or schema theory). In the Sociocultural approach, stereotyping and social identity theory are overdue for extended response questions.
