Difficulty Verdict
The June 2024 OCR A-Level Psychology (H567) series presents a moderate to high difficulty level. While Paper 1 (Research Methods) contained accessible multiple-choice questions, the design task (Q20) and the statistical calculations required absolute procedural accuracy. Papers 2 and 3 tested deep conceptual understanding, demanding that students seamlessly integrate core studies with overarching debates (such as nature vs nurture and individual vs situational explanations) and apply these to unfamiliar practical scenarios.
Where the Marks Are Won and Lost
High-scoring candidates excelled by showing clear, explicit links to their own practical activities in Paper 1, Q20, which acts as a crucial differentiator. Conversely, significant marks were lost due to a lack of precise operationalisation of variables. For instance, in Q20, referencing 'concentration levels' without defining a quantitative tracking method (such as a puzzle score out of 20) prevented access to the top bands. In Paper 3, candidates who failed to construct a clear, evaluative judgment on 'to what extent' explanations of mental illness are socially sensitive missed out on the top marks in Section A.
Examiner Pitfalls & Misconceptions
Several common examiner pitfalls were highlighted in this series:
- Tautological Definitions: In Paper 2, describing control groups as 'participants who acted as a control' was deemed non-creditworthy. Candidates must provide specific clinical characteristics (e.g., normal IQ, age matching).
- Double-Crediting: In Paper 2, Q11f, students often repeated the descriptions of their intervention designs from Q11e instead of evaluating them through methodological/ethical frameworks.
- Math Mistakes: In Paper 1, Q5, several students failed to square the standard deviation of 9 to calculate the variance of \( 81 \).
Strategy & Preparation for Upcoming Series
To prepare effectively for future sittings, students must prioritise the following strategic areas:1. Master the Math: Be fully prepared to calculate the Mann-Whitney U value and explain tied ranks (e.g., sharing ranks 9 and 10 as \( 9.5 \)).2. Own Your Practicals: Ensure that your internal practical work is well-documented and can be readily adapted to design scenarios under exam pressure.3. Debate Fluency: Practise structuring 15-mark essays that do not simply state facts but actively debate the core assumptions of the biological, cognitive, and developmental areas.
