6.3 Fuel Types and Their Uses
Not all fuels are created equal. Depending on where you live and what you are trying to do (like cook a meal versus power a city), you will choose a different energy source. Here are the main types you need to know for the AP exam:
1. Wood and Charcoal

3. The Three Ranks of Coal
Coal is a solid fuel formed from ancient plant remains that were buried and subjected to intense heat and pressure over millions of years. As coal "ages" and gets squeezed more, it changes quality. You should know these three stages:
- Lignite: (Brown Coal). It has the lowest energy density and high moisture content.
- Bituminous: (Soft Coal). This is the most common type used for electricity. It has high energy density but also contains a lot of sulfur.
- Anthracite: (Hard Coal). The "gold standard" of coal. It is the most compressed, has the highest energy content, and burns the cleanest (lowest sulfur).

4. Natural Gas
Natural gas is a gaseous fuel found deep underground, often sitting on top of oil deposits. It is mostly made of Methane \( (CH_{4}) \).

- Refining: We don't just pour "crude oil" into cars. It must be refined (heated up) to separate it into different products like gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel based on their boiling points.

- Coal: Largest reserves are in the United States, Russia, and China.
- Oil/Petroleum: Heavily concentrated in the Middle East (countries like Saudi Arabia and Iraq), but also found in Venezuela and Canada (in the form of oil sands).
- Natural Gas: Large amounts are found in Russia and the United States.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake: Thinking all fossil fuels come from dinosaurs.
Correction: Most fossil fuels actually come from ancient plants (coal) or microscopic ocean organisms like algae and plankton (oil/gas). Sorry, T-Rex didn't power your car!
Mistake: Thinking energy is distributed evenly.
Correction: Distribution is entirely dependent on geological history. If a region didn't have the right organic matter and the right pressure conditions millions of years ago, they won't have those resources today.
