Section 1: Human Population Dynamics

Population dynamics is just a fancy way of saying "how and why populations change over time." For humans, this is influenced by more than just biology; it involves economics, culture, and politics.

The Four Drivers of Population Change

To understand how a population changes, we use the BIDE factors. If you can remember this acronym, you’ve got it made!

1. Births (B): The number of individuals born.
2. Immigration (I): People moving into a country.
3. Deaths (D): The number of individuals who die.
4. Emigration (E): People moving out (exiting) of a country.

We can put these together into a simple formula to see if a population is growing or shrinking:

Growth Rates and Doubling Time

Section 2: The Demographic Transition Model (DTM)

The Demographic Transition is a model that shows how a country’s population changes as it moves from an agricultural (pre-industrial) economy to an industrial and service-based economy. It is usually broken down into four distinct stages.

Stage 1: Pre-Industrial

In this stage, the country has not yet "modernized." Both birth rates and death rates are very high.

  • Result: The population stays relatively stable or grows very slowly.

Stage 2: Transitional (The "Explosion" Stage)
