N1 Grammar Course, Part 1: Timing, Extremes & Inevitability
N1 grammar (~255 points) is the literary and rhetorical register of Japanese — the language of editorials, ceremonies, contracts and novels. Nothing here is exotic decoration: these forms appear daily in written Japanese, and 問題5 (10 items) tests them with distractors one shade of formality apart. Part A covers split-second timing, extremity & emphasis, inevitability & prohibition, and tendency. Part B (文の文法2) covers concession, the formal に/を-phrase aristocracy, status patterns, and sentence-enders.
1. Split-Second Timing (瞬間) — Five Shades of "As Soon As"

The nuance ladder: が早いか/や否や are near-synonyms (written narration); なり adds "and then did something surprising"; そばから adds repetition + futility (the one that pairs with 忘れる, 散らかす); た拍子に adds accident. The exam's question is always "which shade?" — anchor one example each.
2. Extremity & Emphasis
"Not even one" and "even"

The famous paradox pair: 極まる and 極まりない both mean "extremely" — the ない is decorative negation. 失礼極まる＝失礼極まりない. Options offering them as opposites are testing exactly this. Distinguish まみれ (surface-smeared: mud, blood, debt) from ずくめ (through-and-through: all-good, all-black) from だらけ (N3: full of errors/holes).
3. Inevitability, Duty & Prohibition

される vs させる in 余儀なく: 中止を余儀なくされた (the event was forced [into cancellation]) vs 不況が閉鎖を余儀なくさせた (the recession did the forcing) — subject-direction is the tested bit. And note the fossil chain: べし's descendants べく (purpose), べからず (prohibition), べくもない (impossibility), まじき (disgracefulness) — one classical verb, four N1 points.
4. Tendency, Drift & Bad Endings

The blame spectrum: 始末だ narrates someone ELSE's deplorable slide (critical); 羽目になる is MY misfortune (rueful); ずじまい is a quiet regret. Question sentences carry the emotional fingerprint — match it.
5. Doing-While & Dual-Purpose (Elegant Life Admin)

Register gradient: がてら (casual stroll) → かたわら (life arrangement) → かたがた (formal courtesy call, letters). かたがた belongs with お礼・お詫び・ご報告 — ceremony words only.
6. How the Exam Tests Part A — Worked Items
社長のスピーチが終わる（ ）、会場から拍手がわき起こった。
① そばから ② が早いか ③ かたわら ④ ながらに → ②: single instantaneous sequence. ① would demand futile repetition.
この機密は、一言（ ）漏らしてはならない。
① たりとも ② ばかりに ③ なりとも ④ どころか → ①: not even one word (minimal unit + prohibition). ③ なりとも means "at least" — polarity opposite!
大雪のため、登山隊は下山（ ）。
① を余儀なくされた ② を余儀なくさせた ③ に堪えなかった ④ に至らなかった → ①: the team WAS forced. ② needs the snow as subject.
Strategy
- Connection audit first: が早いか/や否や take dictionary form; なり follows dictionary form with same subject; まじき precedes a noun; 極まる takes な-adj stems.
- Polarity audit second: たりとも/だに(しない)/べくもない end negative; 極まりない is AFFIRMATIVE praise-of-extremity.
- Register audit third: べからず on signs, かたがた in letters, 余儀なく in news — a casual sentence rejects them all.
