Welcome to Research Methods for Learning Theories!
In Topic 4: Learning Theories, we focus on how our environment shapes our behavior. Because Learning Theories are all about what we can see and measure, the research methods used are very specific. We don't just guess what someone is thinking; we observe what they do. In these notes, we will look at how psychologists watch behavior, why they sometimes use animals, and how they use the Chi-squared test to see if their results are actually meaningful.
1. Observational Research
Observational research is the bread and butter of Learning Theories. Think of Bandura’s Bobo Doll study—he didn't ask the children if they felt aggressive; he watched them to see if they hit the doll.
Types of Observation
Psychologists choose different ways to observe depending on what they want to find out:
- Naturalistic vs. Structured: In naturalistic observations, you watch behavior in its real-life setting (like a playground). In structured observations, the researcher sets up a specific situation (like a controlled playroom).
- Overt vs. Covert: Overt means the participants know they are being watched. Covert means the researcher is "undercover" or hidden, so participants act naturally.
- Participant vs. Non-participant: In participant observation, the researcher joins the group they are studying. In non-participant, they stay on the sidelines and just watch.
How do we record data?
We can't just write down everything; it’s too much! Instead, we use specific techniques:
- Tallying: Making a mark every time a specific behavior (like a "punch") happens.
- Event Sampling: The researcher records every single time a specific event occurs during the whole observation.
- Time Sampling: The researcher only records behavior at set time intervals (e.g., every 30 seconds).
Analyzing the Data
Observations give us two types of data:
1. Quantitative Data (Numbers): We use tallying to get totals. This is objective and easy to put into charts.
2. Qualitative Data (Descriptions): We use Thematic Analysis. This involves looking at notes or recordings and identifying "themes" or recurring patterns in behavior. For example, a theme might be "verbal aggression."
Quick Review: Remember, the main goal of an observation in Learning Theories is to be objective. This means recording what is actually happening, not what you think it means!
2. Using Animals in Research
You might wonder why psychologists study rats or pigeons. In Learning Theories, many "laws" of learning (like Classical and Operant Conditioning) were first discovered using animals in labs.
Why use animals?
- Animals have shorter lifespans, so we can see the effects of learning over a whole lifetime.
- Researchers can have high control over the animal’s environment, which isn't possible (or ethical) with humans.
- The basic processes of learning are thought to be the same in animals and humans.
Ethics and Regulations
Psychologists can't just do whatever they want with animals. There are strict rules to ensure they are treated humanely:
- Scientific Procedures Act (1986): This UK law covers any scientific procedure that might cause an animal pain, suffering, or distress. Researchers must have a license to carry out these studies.
- Home Office Regulations: The UK government (the Home Office) sets strict standards for animal housing, food, and veterinary care. They also insist on the "3 Rs": Replacing animals with other methods when possible, Reducing the number of animals used, and Refining procedures to minimize suffering.

3. The Chi-Squared Test (\(\chi^2\))
Don't let the name scare you! The Chi-squared test is just a mathematical tool to help us decide if the difference we found in our study is "real" or just down to luck (chance).
When do we use it?
In your Topic 4 Practical Investigation, you will likely use Chi-squared. You use it when:
- You are looking for a difference between two groups (or an association).
- The data is Nominal (this means it’s in categories, like "Aggressive" vs. "Not Aggressive").
- The design is Independent Groups (different people or animals in each condition).
The Formula
The formula is provided in your exam, so you don't need to memorize it, but you do need to know how it works:
\(\chi^2 = \sum \frac{(o - e)^2}{e}\)
- \(o\) = the observed value (the results you actually collected).
- \(e\) = the expected value (what you would expect to see if there was no effect).
- \(\sum\) = this just means "sum of" or "add them all up."
Interpreting the Results
To find out if your result is significant (meaning it didn't happen by chance), you need two things:
1. Degrees of Freedom (\(df\)): Calculated as \(df = (r - 1) \times (c - 1)\), where \(r\) is rows and \(c\) is columns in your data table.
2. The Critical Value Table: You look up your \(df\) at the \(p \le .05\) level.
The Golden Rule: For Chi-squared, your calculated value must be EQUAL TO or GREATER THAN the critical value from the table for the results to be significant.
4. The Scientific Status of Psychology
Learning theorists pride themselves on being "scientific." But what does that actually mean? To be scientific, research should aim for the following:
- Empiricism: Gathering evidence through direct observation and experience. If you can't see it, it’s not empirical!
- Reliability: If another researcher repeated the study using the same controls, would they get the same results? (This is called replicability).
- Validity: Does the study measure what it claims to measure?
- Internal Validity: Was it the IV that caused the change in the DV, or was it a "confounding variable"?
- Ecological Validity: Does the behavior seen in the lab reflect real life?
- Falsification: A theory is only scientific if it is possible to prove it wrong. If you can't test it, it’s not science!
- Reductionism: This is the idea of breaking down complex human behavior into simple parts (like a single response to a reward). Learning theories are often called reductionist because they ignore thoughts and focus only on stimulus-response.
