Assessment Architecture & Core Focus
The CCEA AS History suite balances thematic depth, source analysis, and historical interpretations. Unit AS 1 tests short analytical essays (10 marks), primary source utility evaluation (20 marks), and a 30-mark comparative evaluation of two conflicting historical interpretations. Unit AS 2 focuses purely on depth essays divided into 8-mark explanatory components and 22-mark extended analytical and evaluative essays requiring balanced judgements.
Where the Marks Are Won
- Unit AS 1 Interpretations (30 Marks): Level 4 responses rigorously contrast the central arguments of both historians, deconstructing the evidence and logic used, while introducing extensive contextual knowledge to determine which extract offers a more convincing historical explanation.
- Unit AS 1 Source Utility (20 Marks): Successful answers interrogate provenance (nature, origin, purpose, audience, and tone) alongside precise contextual knowledge rather than treating utility as mere reliability or factual accuracy.
- Unit AS 2 Extended Essays (22 Marks): Top-band essays immediately engage with the given quotation/premise, establish clear criteria for judgement, provide robust counter-arguments, and maintain sustained analysis throughout.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
A frequent error in AS 1 interpretation questions is treating extracts as primary sources or producing two unconnected summaries without direct cross-comparative synthesis. In source utility questions, candidates often write purely narrative accounts of the historical background rather than tying context directly to the strengths and limitations of the extract. In AS 2 essays, candidates often drift into chronological storytelling rather than sustaining a thematic, factor-led analysis against the stated proposition.
Strategic Revision & Exam Approach
Plan essays strictly around conceptual themes rather than narrative timelines. Allocate approximately 15 minutes for the AS 1 10-marker, 30 minutes for source utility, and 45 minutes for the interpretation question. In AS 2, split each 45-minute question into 10–12 minutes on part (i) and 30–33 minutes on part (ii).
