Calculators are permitted and expected on both A2 papers, the blueprint for A2 1 explicitly says so. CCEA follows the standard JCQ rule: no stored, retrievable information of any kind, including formulae, notes or text, and no calculator with symbolic algebra, translator or internet or communication functions. Switch on exam mode if your calculator has one rather than relying on the reset button, which does not clear stored memory. Show every step of a calculation on the page, since CCEA's own-figure rule only credits later steps when the method is visible.

  • AO1: AO1: demonstrate knowledge of terms or concepts and theories or models to show an understanding of the behaviour of economic agents and how they are affected by and respond to economic issues (25%)
  • AO2: AO2: apply knowledge and understanding to various economic contexts to show how economic agents are affected by and respond to economic issues (25%)
  • AO3: AO3: analyse issues within economics, showing an understanding of their impact on economic agents (25%)
  • AO4: AO4: evaluate economic arguments and use qualitative and quantitative evidence to support informed judgements relating to economic issues (25%)

Index numbers and PPP without losing the base year

Keep the correct base year figure available throughout a multi-step index number, real GDP index, or purchasing power parity calculation.

For questions involving a trade-weighted index, a real GDP index, or purchasing power parity that need dividing by the same base year figure more than once.

手順
When a question involves a trade-weighted index, a real GDP index, or purchasing power parity, store the base year figure with M+ as soon as you identify it. Every later calculation in that question divides by the same stored number, which removes the risk of quietly swapping in the wrong year partway through.

The calculator's memory only holds numbers you enter during the exam. Do not pre-load index values, exchange rates, or formulae from revision before the exam starts, this counts as stored retrievable information under JCQ rules and is not permitted.

Two-step percentage change for the Fisher equation and comparative advantage

Get the nominal and inflation percentage changes, or the pre-trade and post-trade output ratios, as separate visible steps before combining them into a final answer.

For Fisher equation real interest rate questions, or comparative advantage questions comparing pre-trade and post-trade output ratios.

手順
Calculate the nominal and inflation percentage changes as two separate on-screen steps before combining them for a real interest rate answer, and do the same for the pre-trade and post-trade output ratios in a comparative advantage question. Keep each intermediate result visible on your answer sheet, not just on the calculator display.

Clear any custom notes or stored text from the calculator before the exam and activate exam mode if the model has one. A calculator with a stored formula list is treated the same as a candidate carrying in a written formula sheet, which is not allowed.

4Quantitative skills across both A2 papers

Leaving out clear workings and formulas in Section A calculations, so a single arithmetic slip risks losing every mark in the question.

Write the formula first, then each intermediate value on its own line, including which figure is the base year in an index calculation, before giving a final answer.
4Case study analysis, both papers

Treating Section B case study data purely descriptively, quoting excerpts without connecting them to the micro or macro model the question is testing.

Name the model you are using in your first sentence and then use the specific figures from the case study as evidence inside that model, not as decoration around it.

Confusing market share, the percentage of industry sales a firm holds, with market power, its ability to raise price above marginal cost.

State both concepts separately if a question invites the mix-up. A high market share in a contestable market does not automatically mean high market power.

Explaining oligopoly price rigidity without linking the kink in the demand curve to the discontinuity it creates in the marginal revenue curve.

Draw the kinked demand curve, mark the elastic segment above the kink and the inelastic segment below it, then show the vertical gap in marginal revenue that results. State that this gap is why small cost changes do not move price.
8Extended essay, Section C

Writing a one-sided 30-mark essay that presents theoretical assertions without a counterargument, a real-world constraint, or an assumption that might not hold.

Plan one counterargument before writing the essay: an unintended consequence, a regulatory limitation, or a condition under which the theory breaks down. End with a judgement that weighs it against your main argument.
3Fiscal policy

Assuming a budget deficit is the same thing as the total national debt, rather than the annual addition to it.

State clearly that a deficit is a single year's shortfall between spending and revenue, while debt is the accumulated total of past deficits minus surpluses.
4Monetary policy and the financial sector

Explaining a bond market question without stating the inverse relationship between bond prices and yields, which is usually the mechanism the question is actually testing.

State the relationship directly: when bond prices rise, yields fall, and vice versa, then use this to explain the transmission the question asks about.
1Quantitative skills across both A2 papers

Leaving out units of measurement, such as dollars, billions, or tonnes, in quantitative Section A and Section B answers.

State the unit every time you write a final figure, even if it seems obvious from context. Mark schemes check for it.
