Calculators are permitted and needed for this paper's heat flow and U-value calculations. The standard JCQ rule applies: no retrievable information stored in the calculator, including saved formulae, notes or programs. Clear your calculator's memory before the exam, show your formula and working on the page rather than relying on the calculator to carry it, and switch on exam mode if your calculator has one.

  • AO1: AO1: knowledge and understanding of environmental technology (28%)
  • AO2: AO2: the application of skills, knowledge and understanding through different contexts associated with environmental technology (36%)
  • AO3: AO3: the ability to investigate, analyse, evaluate, make reasoned judgements and communicate findings about issues in environmental technology (36%)

Live heat flow (U-value) calculation

Get the heat flow in watts through a building element from its U-value, area and temperature difference, using the correct net area after subtracting windows or doors.

For U-value questions that ask for the heat flow through a wall or other building element.

手順
Calculate heat flow through a building element as one live sequence: U-value, times, area, times, temperature difference, equals, giving watts. Before you calculate wall heat flow, subtract any window or door area from the gross wall area, then use that net figure in the calculation.

Perform this calculation live from the figures given in the question, showing your formula and working on the page. CCEA and JCQ rules do not allow any formula, note or program to be stored in the calculator beforehand. Clear the memory before the exam and use exam mode if your calculator has one.

Live cost-per-unit comparison from a data table

Get a cost-per-unit figure for each energy system in a comparison question, so the systems can be compared on a like-for-like basis rather than by raw totals.

For questions giving cost and output figures for two or more energy systems and asking you to compare them.

手順
When a question gives you cost and output figures for two or more energy systems and asks you to compare them, key each system's cost divided by its output as a separate live calculation, then compare the resulting figures directly rather than comparing the raw totals.

This is a live comparison performed on data printed in the exam paper. No figures, ratios or formulae from previous practice may be pre-stored in the calculator, which is not permitted under JCQ rules.

2Sustainability and future development

Confusing ecological footprint, the total land and sea area needed to supply resources and absorb waste, with carbon footprint, which measures greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel use specifically.

State which one the question names before you answer. Ecological footprint is broader than carbon footprint, which is only one part of it.
2Hydrogen fuel cell opportunities

Omitting the key process parameters in a steam reforming answer, such as the 700 to 1000 degrees Celsius temperature range and the 3 to 25 bar pressure range.

Learn the operating figures for each named industrial process on your paper and quote them rather than writing 'high temperature and pressure'.
2Energy building performance

Giving a final numerical answer in a U-value or heat flow calculation without stating the unit or showing the working that produced it.

Write the formula first, show every multiplication step, and finish with the unit attached to your answer, watts or W/m squared K.
2Waste management

Making generic environmental statements instead of naming the specific EU Directive that applies, such as the Landfill Directive or the Waste Framework Directive.

Attach a named piece of legislation to any statutory point you make on waste or emissions policy.
3Hydrogen fuel cell opportunities

Confusing the anode and cathode half-reactions in a PEM fuel cell, or writing molecular equations instead of the required ionic half-equations.

Learn both half-reactions as ionic equations and check which electrode is which before you write, oxidation at the anode, reduction at the cathode.
2Energy building performance

Forgetting to subtract window or door area from the gross wall area before calculating total heat flow through a building's fabric.

Calculate net wall area first, gross area minus openings, and only then multiply by the U-value and temperature difference.

Treating phytoextraction and phytoremediation as interchangeable terms, rather than recognising phytoextraction's specific purpose of commercial metal recovery.

State the purpose alongside the term: phytoremediation decontaminates, phytoextraction specifically recovers metal for reuse.
3Quality of written communication

Writing the QWC questions, 5(b), 7 and 9, as disjointed bullet points rather than structured paragraphs with specialist terminology, which caps the answer in the lower marking bands.

Plan each QWC answer as named paragraphs before you write, and use the correct technical term, biohydrometallurgy, anaerobic digestion, on first mention.
