No calculator is needed for either A2 History paper. Both units are entirely written response, with no numerical or statistical content.
- AO1: AO1: demonstrate, organise and communicate knowledge and understanding to analyse and evaluate key features, making substantiated judgements and exploring cause, consequence, change, continuity, similarity, difference and significance (58%)
- AO2: AO2: analyse and evaluate appropriate source material, primary and/or contemporary to the period, in its historical context (19%)
- AO3: AO3: analyse and evaluate, in relation to historical context, different ways in which aspects of the past have been interpreted (23%)

Writing the A2 1 synoptic essay around one decade or sub-period instead of the whole specified century.
回避方法: Organise the essay by theme or factor, and show how each one plays out at different points across the whole period, not chronologically by decade. - 2high影響する配点: 5Source evaluation, A2 2 Q1(a)
Evaluating a primary source's utility with a stock phrase, such as calling it biased because it is an eyewitness account, without linking that to what the source can and cannot show.
回避方法: Name the author, date, and audience, then say specifically what that combination allows the source to reveal, and what it cannot. - 3high影響する配点: 6Interpretations, A2 2 Q2
Summarising Interpretation A and Interpretation B one after the other in A2 2 Question 2 without directly comparing them.
回避方法: Write a paragraph testing each interpretation against your own knowledge, then a final paragraph that states which is more convincing and why, engaging with both together. - 4medium影響する配点: 4Source synthesis, A2 2 Q1(b)
Treating the two source extracts in A2 2 Question 1(b) in isolation, without weaving in independent contextual knowledge.
回避方法: Use both sources together in the same paragraph and add at least one fact from outside the sources to support or challenge what they say. - 5medium影響する配点: 4A2 1 synoptic essay
Asserting a trend of change or continuity in the A2 1 essay without specific supporting evidence.
回避方法: Every claim about change needs a named event, date, or figure attached to it. An unsupported claim reads as an assertion, not an argument. - 6medium影響する配点: 3Interpretations, A2 2 Q2
Assuming full marks in the interpretations question requires declaring one historian entirely right and dismissing the other.
回避方法: Acknowledge what the weaker interpretation still gets right before explaining why the other is, on balance, more convincing. - 7medium影響する配点: 5Time management
Running out of time on the final question of A2 2 after over-writing the earlier source questions.
回避方法: Both A2 papers run at just under two minutes a mark. Time each question against that figure rather than writing until you feel finished.
