Religious Studies 4610
A2 Religious Studies drops candidates below Band 4 for one missing element: an explicit link to a second unit of study. See exactly how the 150-mark paper is timed and marked, and the fixes examiners actually ask for.

8Synoptic assessment, Section B
Writing Question 4 part (a) using only the current unit's content, with no explicit, developed reference to a second unit of study.
Pick your second unit before you start Section A. Build one full paragraph of genuine comparison into part (a), not a passing mention. 10AO2 evaluative essays
Producing a descriptive, narrative account in a 30-mark part (b) question instead of a sustained critical evaluation.
Structure part (b) around a thesis and a genuine counter-argument, then a judgement. Retelling what a scholar said is not the same as assessing whether their argument holds up.
Naming a scholar without explaining their specific thesis or contribution to the debate.
State what the named scholar actually argued in one sentence before you use their name to support or challenge a point. 6Synoptic assessment, Section B
Treating other aspects of human experience in Question 4 part (b) as an abstract theoretical point instead of a specific, concrete example.
Use a named, real example, historical, legal, or contemporary, and connect it directly to the theme, not a generalised hypothetical.
Spending too long on the 20-mark part (a) questions and running out of time on the heavier 30-mark part (b) essays.
Time each part separately: about 16 minutes for a 20-mark part (a), about 24 minutes for a 30-mark part (b).
Presenting a one-sided, polemical argument in a 30-mark essay with no strong counter-argument.
Write the strongest version of the opposing case you can before you argue against it. A weak counter-argument is easy for an examiner to spot.
Assuming that mentioning a second unit anywhere in Question 4 part (a) satisfies the synoptic requirement.
The mark scheme wants sustained exemplification from the second unit, not a name-check. Give it as much development as your primary unit gets.
Believing that agreeing with the stimulus statement counts against you, or that disagreeing is always the safer AO2 choice.
Agree or disagree freely. What is credited is a balanced critique that shows you tested the alternative reading before settling on your position.
