CCEA AS Economics rewards students who manipulate case-study data instead of quoting it and draw market failure diagrams correctly. This page maps where the marks sit on both papers and fixes the mistakes examiner reports flag most.

Calculators are permitted on both AS1 and AS2. CCEA follows the standard JCQ rule: no stored, retrievable information of any kind, including databanks, formulae or text, and no calculator with symbolic algebra, translator or internet or communication functions. If your calculator has an exam mode, switch it on before the exam rather than relying on the reset button, which clears settings but not stored memory. Because CCEA marks calculations using an own-figure rule, write out every step on the page. A final answer with no working shown gets no credit if it turns out to be wrong.
AO1: AO1: demonstrate knowledge of terms or concepts and theories or models to show an understanding of the behaviour of economic agents and how they are affected by and respond to economic issues (30%)
AO2: AO2: apply knowledge and understanding to various economic contexts to show how economic agents are affected by and respond to economic issues (30%)
AO3: AO3: analyse issues within economics, showing an understanding of their impact on economic agents (20%)
AO4: AO4: evaluate economic arguments and use qualitative and quantitative evidence to support informed judgements relating to economic issues (20%)
目的: Get a percentage change with the correct sign, so a fall is not accidentally rounded away, including the two changes needed for a price elasticity answer.
使う場面: For percentage change questions and for price elasticity of demand questions that need the percentage change in quantity and the percentage change in price.
手順
Use the calculator's subtract-divide-multiply route for every percentage change: new minus original, divided by the ORIGINAL figure, times 100. Keep the negative sign on screen if the result is a fall rather than rounding it away in your head. For a PED question, work out the percentage change in quantity first, note it down, then the percentage change in price, then divide.
試験での注意: Do not store a pre-written elasticity formula, macro or note in the calculator's memory before the exam. CCEA and JCQ rules ban any retrievable information stored in a calculator, including formulae and text. Clear the memory and switch on exam mode if your model has one.
Running totals for area-based questions
目的: Keep an accurate running total when adding several diagram areas together, such as consumer surplus, producer surplus or tax revenue read from a diagram.
使う場面: For questions asking you to calculate consumer surplus, producer surplus or tax revenue from a supply-and-demand diagram made up of more than one area.
手順
When a case study question asks for consumer surplus, producer surplus, or tax revenue read from a diagram, use the M+ key to add each component (for example a rectangle plus a triangle) as you calculate it, then press MR once at the end to confirm the total before you write it down.
試験での注意: This only replaces mental addition, not the diagram or the working. Show each area's individual calculation on the page; the calculator is there to check your addition, not to produce the answer on its own.
よくあるミス
1high影響する配点: 4Section B data response
Quoting the raw numbers from the case study table instead of manipulating them, for example writing that unemployment 'increased' without giving the percentage point change or percentage change.
回避方法: Calculate the change yourself: state the start figure, the end figure, and either the percentage point difference or the percentage change, before commenting on the trend.
2high影響する配点: 5Market failures and imperfections
Drawing the welfare loss triangle pointing the wrong way on an externality diagram, or labelling marginal private cost and marginal social cost as if they were the same line.
回避方法: Draw MPC and MSC as two separate curves, with the vertical gap between them equal to the externality. The welfare loss triangle sits between the private and social equilibrium quantities, not outside them.
3high影響する配点: 3Elasticity of demand and supply
Skipping intermediate working in multi-step elasticity and consumer surplus calculations, so a single arithmetic slip loses every mark that follows.
回避方法: Write the formula, then each percentage change as its own line, then the final figure. CCEA applies an own-figure rule that only pays out if the steps are visible on the page.
4medium影響する配点: 3The basic economic problem of scarcity and choice
Treating a movement along the production possibility frontier as if it were an inward shift of the frontier itself.
回避方法: A movement along the PPF is a reallocation of existing resources between two goods. Only draw the whole curve shifting inward when resources themselves are destroyed or degraded, for example after a natural disaster.
5medium影響する配点: 2Macroeconomic objectives
Confusing economic inactivity with unemployment, missing that the inactive population includes students, early retirees and carers who are not actively seeking work.
回避方法: Define unemployment as people actively seeking and available for work but without a job. Inactivity is a separate, wider category that unemployment statistics do not include.
6medium影響する配点: 4Exchange rates
Assuming a rising exchange rate works through aggregate supply, when the main transmission is through aggregate demand as exports become less competitive and fall.
回避方法: Trace the chain on the diagram: a stronger pound raises export prices abroad, export volumes fall, and AD shifts left. Only bring in AS if the question is specifically about imported cost changes.
7high影響する配点: 6Government intervention in markets
Writing a one-sided 15-mark or 20-mark essay that lists advantages of a policy without any opposing trade-off, unintended consequence, or implementation constraint.
回避方法: Plan a counterargument before you start writing. State it directly, for example 'however, this policy also has a time lag of...', rather than letting the essay end after the supporting points.
8low影響する配点: 1Elasticity of demand and supply
Dropping the negative sign or direction on a price elasticity of demand answer, for example writing '7.6%' instead of '-7.6%' or 'a fall of 7.6%'.
回避方法: State the direction in words as well as the number. Demand elasticities are negative because price and quantity move in opposite directions, and the sign is part of the mark scheme, not a formatting choice.
