6Source-based analysis (AS 1)
Answering AS 1 Questions 2 and 3 from background knowledge alone, without quoting or referencing the printed source.
Underline the phrase from the source you are using as you write, and open at least one sentence per question with a direct reference to it. 5Extended evaluative essay
Writing a one-sided essay for the 25-mark or 26-mark questions, exploring only the side of the argument the candidate agrees with.
Write the strongest opposing point for every argument you make before your conclusion, then use your final sentence to weigh both sides and answer the question directly.
Making generalised claims with no named act, campaign, committee or date behind them.
Attach one concrete, dated example to every point above the lowest level. A point with no example is not developed enough to score highly. 3The British Judiciary
Treating the Supreme Court as able to strike down an Act of Parliament, confusing UK judicial review with US-style constitutional review.
State plainly that the Supreme Court can issue a declaration of incompatibility or rule executive action ultra vires; it cannot invalidate primary legislation. 3Pressure Groups in the UK
Assuming a pressure group's power comes mainly from its membership numbers.
Explain influence through insider status, financial or economic leverage, and alignment with government policy, not size alone. 3The House of Lords
Answering House of Lords questions by naming individual politicians instead of the categories of Peer.
Use the three category names, Hereditary, Life and Spiritual Peers, whenever a question asks about the composition of, or criticisms of, the Lords. 4Quality of written communication
Ending an essay with a summary of points already made instead of a direct, weighed answer to the question set.
Write a final sentence that states which side of the argument is stronger and why, phrased as a direct answer to the question's wording, not a recap.
