No subject-specific calculator restriction is stated beyond the general CCEA and JCQ rules: calculators are permitted for the numeric calculations in all three papers (stoichiometry, enthalpy, stress and strain), but must not have any retrievable information stored in them and must not offer symbolic algebra manipulation, language translation, or communication with other machines or the internet.
AO1: AO1: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures. (45%)
AO2: AO2: apply knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, processes, techniques and procedures in a range of theoretical and practical contexts, and when handling qualitative and quantitative data, to solve scientific problems. (31%)
AO3: AO3: analyse, interpret and evaluate a range of scientific information, ideas and evidence to make judgements and reach conclusions, including in relation to issues, and to refine practical design and procedures. (24%)
目的: Hold an intermediate value, such as a converted diameter or a partial enthalpy sum, without retyping it later in the same question.
使う場面: Hess cycle and stress/strain calculations where an early converted value or sub-total is needed again two or three steps later.
手順
Calculate the value, press the memory store key and a letter to save it, continue with the rest of the working, then recall it with the same letter when needed again.
試験での注意: Clear the memory at the start of the exam and only store values calculated live during the paper, this is not a saved program.
Stepwise arithmetic, not calculator-only working
Any CCEA-permitted scientific calculator
目的: Keep the shown method that earns credit visible on the page, even where the final number is wrong.
使う場面: Stoichiometry, molar yield and titration questions in AS 3, and stress/strain calculations in AS 5.
手順
Write the formula and the substitution with units on paper first, then key the numbers into the calculator only for the arithmetic step, and copy the result back onto the page.
試験での注意: The calculator performs only the arithmetic here, live during the exam, it holds no stored formulae or notes.
Statistics mode for repeated readings
Casio fx-991EX ClassWiz (or equivalent)
目的: Find the mean of several repeat readings quickly and accurately.
使う場面: Practical description or data questions involving repeated titre volumes or extension measurements.
手順
Open statistics mode, key in each repeat reading pressing equals after each, then read the mean from the variable menu and quote it with the correct number of significant figures.
試験での注意: This uses only the readings given or measured during the exam, entered live, nothing is stored from before the exam.
よくあるミス
1high影響する配点: 2Practical calculations, units
Leaving a wire's diameter or a volume in millimetres or cm3 when substituting into a formula, instead of converting to metres or dm3 first.
回避方法: Convert every measurement to the units the formula needs as a separate first line, before any substitution.
2high影響する配点: 2Definitions, energetics and homeostasis
Giving an incomplete definition of standard enthalpy change or negative feedback, missing 'one mole' and 'standard conditions', or missing that the corrective mechanism switches off at the set point.
回避方法: Learn definitions as complete sentences with every required clause, not as a single keyword, and write out the full sentence in the answer.
3medium影響する配点: 1Industrial processes, catalysis
Confusing adsorption with absorption when describing a heterogeneous catalyst such as a car exhaust converter.
回避方法: State explicitly that adsorption is the catalyst's surface binding gas molecules, distinct from absorption, which draws a substance into the bulk of a material.
4high影響する配点: 3Energetics, Hess cycles
Forgetting to multiply standard enthalpy of formation or combustion values by the stoichiometric coefficient for each species in a Hess cycle, for example missing the factor of two for water in a combustion equation.
回避方法: Write the balanced equation first and label each species with its coefficient before pulling any enthalpy value into the cycle.
5medium影響する配点: 2Material science, stress and strain
Calculating cross-sectional area for Young's modulus questions from the diameter instead of the radius, or leaving the measurement in millimetres.
回避方法: Halve the diameter to get the radius and convert to metres before squaring in the area formula.
6medium影響する配点: 2Kinetics, graph drawing
Drawing a lower-temperature Maxwell-Boltzmann curve with its peak shifted to the right, or starting a rate or stress-strain graph away from the origin.
回避方法: Remember a lower temperature shifts the peak left and higher, and always start these curves cleanly through the origin.
7high影響する配点: 4QWC, extended response
Writing a generic, unbalanced Quality of Written Communication answer that covers only one side of a two-sided prompt, such as only risks and not benefits.
回避方法: List every bullet point in the question stem before writing, and structure the answer so each one gets its own paragraph with specialist vocabulary.
8medium影響する配点: 2Practical methods
Describing a practical method without naming the specific apparatus, such as a volumetric flask or micrometer screw gauge, or without stating that readings were repeated.
回避方法: Name the exact piece of equipment for every step of the method, and state the number of repeat readings taken.
