You may use a scientific calculator and the Data Leaflet on every paper in this subject. CCEA follows the JCQ rule that applies across all its exams: no calculator with a computer algebra system, no borrowing a calculator from another candidate, and nothing stored in memory that could be retrieved during the exam, including formulae, notes or text. If your calculator has an exam mode, switch it on. It clears stored data far more reliably than the reset button, which only resets display settings and leaves stored programs or text in memory.

  • AO1: AO1: demonstrate knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, and scientific techniques and procedures (40%)
  • AO2: AO2: apply knowledge and understanding of and develop skills in scientific ideas, and scientific enquiry, techniques and procedures (40%)
  • AO3: AO3: analyse scientific information and ideas to interpret and evaluate, make judgements and draw conclusions, and develop and improve experimental procedures (20%)

Convert time and length units before substituting into a formula

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

Stops a minutes-to-seconds or centimetres-to-metres slip from breaking a power or work done calculation.

Any power, work done, or speed question where the given units do not already match the formula, such as time in minutes or distance in centimetres.

手順
Convert the given value to the formula's base unit as its own calculator step, for example minutes times 60 for seconds, or centimetres divided by 100 for metres, and write the converted figure on your answer line before substituting it into the formula.

This is a live, in-exam technique only. CCEA and JCQ ban anything stored in a calculator's memory before the exam, including formulae or old working, so clear your calculator and switch on exam mode if it has one before you sit down.

Convert mass to weight before a force or pressure calculation

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

Removes the mass-versus-weight mix-up that breaks force, pressure and moments questions.

Any question giving mass in kilograms where the formula needs a force in newtons, such as pressure, moments or weight questions.

手順
Multiply the given mass by \(g = 10\,\text{N/kg}\) as a separate calculator step and write the resulting weight on your answer line before it goes into the rest of the calculation.

Use this only for values calculated live in the exam. No stored programme or formula list is permitted in the calculator you bring in.

Chain a molar mass or mole calculation with memory recall

Casio fx-83/85 series (scientific)

Keeps a mole or empirical formula calculation exact across two or more steps instead of retyping a rounded intermediate value.

Any chemistry calculation that finds moles first and then uses that figure for a further step, such as mass, concentration or empirical formula.

手順
Calculate the first value and store it with the memory-store key (M+), then recall it (MR) for the next step of the calculation rather than reading a rounded number off your working and retyping it.

This is a technique for the exam itself, not something to prepare in advance. Your calculator must be cleared of any stored data or formulae before the exam starts.

Leaving a final answer line blank of its unit in moments and stability calculations, despite the answer line explicitly prompting 'Unit ='.

Treat the unit as its own separate mark. Write it the moment you write the number, not as an afterthought.

Writing a 6-mark QWC answer that covers only part of what the question asks, for example describing metallic bonding without mentioning delocalised electrons, or missing a required stage of a biological process.

Before writing, list every part of the question in the margin and check the finished answer touches each one before moving on.

Forgetting to convert minutes to seconds in power calculations using \(P = \dfrac{W}{t}\), which introduces a factor of 60 error into the final answer.

Convert time to seconds as its own written step immediately after reading the question, before you touch the formula.
2Nervous system and hormones

Confusing the roles of insulin and glucagon, or misidentifying which organ, the pancreas or the liver, is responsible for a described hormonal response.

Learn insulin and glucagon as a pair with opposite effects on blood glucose, and name the pancreas as the organ that releases both.

Using mass directly in a force or pressure calculation instead of first converting it to weight, forgetting to multiply by \(g = 10\,\text{N/kg}\).

Whenever a question gives mass but the formula needs force, calculate weight as its own step before substituting anything else.
1Symbols, formulae and equations

Omitting state symbols in a balanced or ionic equation when the question specifically asks for them.

Once a question says 'include state symbols', add one to every species, including (aq) for dissolved ions and (l) for water, not just the ones that feel necessary.
2Osmosis and plant transport

Believing plant cells burst when placed in pure water, rather than explaining that the cell wall creates turgor pressure that resists the cell bursting.

State explicitly that the cell wall, not the cell membrane, is what stops a plant cell bursting in a dilute solution, and name the resulting pressure as turgor pressure.
1Quantitative chemistry

Failing to round a final numerical answer to the degree of precision the question specifically asks for, such as one decimal place or a whole number.

Underline or circle the precision instruction the moment you read the question, and check the final answer against it before moving on.
