A scientific or graphical calculator that meets JCQ regulations may be used (some GCSE Mathematics and Science papers are non-calculator). Graphical calculators must be set to exam mode; you must clear any stored programs, notes or data before the exam, and the calculator must not be able to retrieve stored text or formulae.

Graph: zeros, intersections & turning points

Graphical calculator / GDC (exam mode)

Plot a function to read its roots (zeros), points of intersection, and maxima/minima.

Checking solutions, sketching, or solving where an analytic method is hard.

手順
Graph the function(s) and use the built-in zero, intersect and maximum/minimum tools.

Allowed under JCQ rules, but you must still show your method — an unsupported calculator answer earns no method marks. Clear all stored programs, notes and data (graphical calculators in exam mode) before the exam.

Numerical equation solver

Graphical calculator / GDC (exam mode)

Solve an equation or find a variable numerically when an algebraic route is long or implicit.

Iterative or implicit equations, or to confirm an algebraic solution.

手順
Use the equation/zero solver, entering the equation and a sensible starting estimate.

Allowed under JCQ rules, but you must still show your method — an unsupported calculator answer earns no method marks. Clear all stored programs, notes and data (graphical calculators in exam mode) before the exam.

Numerical integration & differentiation

Graphical calculator / GDC (exam mode)

Evaluate a definite integral \(\int_a^b f(x)\,dx\) or a gradient \(f'(x)\) at a point.

Checking calculus answers, or where only a numerical value is needed.

手順
Use the GDC's numeric integral / derivative function with the limits or the point.

Allowed under JCQ rules, but you must still show your method — an unsupported calculator answer earns no method marks. Clear all stored programs, notes and data (graphical calculators in exam mode) before the exam.

Statistics & probability distributions

Graphical calculator / GDC (exam mode)

1-var/2-var statistics, linear regression, and cumulative binomial / normal / Poisson probabilities without tables.

Statistics questions and hypothesis tests.

手順
Enter data in the statistics editor, or use the distribution menu (binomial cdf, normal cdf, …).

Allowed under JCQ rules, but you must still show your method — an unsupported calculator answer earns no method marks. Clear all stored programs, notes and data (graphical calculators in exam mode) before the exam.

4Research Methods & Practical Investigations

Using generic textbook evaluation points in practical investigation questions without referencing the specific candidate-designed study.

Explicitly state details of your own empirical investigation (e.g., target population, specific tally categories, local environment) when evaluating reliability or validity.
2Data Calculations & Statistical Significance

Failing to explicitly link statistical calculated values to the critical values from the formula booklet to prove significance.

Compare the calculated value directly to the critical value in the table, stating the degrees of freedom (df), p-value (usually 0.05), and whether it is a one- or two-tailed test.
8Extended Essays (AO1/AO3)

Writing purely descriptive (AO1) essays in high-tariff questions without providing a balanced evaluation (AO3).

Structure essays with an equal emphasis on knowledge and critique. Use PEEL formatting to ensure every descriptive point is paired with an evaluation point.
6Clinical and Criminological Applications (AO2)

Failing to explicitly apply evaluative arguments to the designated characters or contexts in application questions.

Integrate scenario clues directly into your evaluation points (e.g., linking CBT directly to Maxyme's behaviors in prison or Henry's superhero delusions).
2Clinical Psychology Diagnostics

Vague or imprecise definitions of key research terms such as 'reliability' and 'validity' in diagnostics.

Define diagnostic reliability precisely as inter-rater consistency (different clinicians reaching the same diagnosis) and diagnostic validity as accuracy (correctly identifying the true disorder).
2Statistical Table Completion

Miscalculating degrees of freedom (df) or choosing the incorrect critical value from statistical tables.

Double-check the specific df formula for the test used (e.g., df = (r-1)(c-1) for Chi-squared) and verify if the hypothesis is one-tailed or two-tailed.
1Quantitative Skills & Calculations

Failing to express final mathematical ratios and fractions in their lowest simplified forms.

Always reduce ratios (e.g., 18:6 should be simplified to 3:1) and fractions (e.g., 8/24 should be written as 1/3) to their simplest form.
