This paper is mostly written analysis and evaluation, with light arithmetic in places such as multiplying likelihood and impact scores in a risk management question or comparing market share percentages in a Boston Matrix question. Where a calculator is used, the standard JCQ rule applies: no stored, retrievable information of any kind, including formulae, notes or text, and no symbolic algebra or internet or communication functions.
4Techniques for business planning
Explaining what a Boston Matrix quadrant means in theory without placing the client's actual products or services into the correct quadrant using the market share and growth data given.
Spend most of the answer on application: state which quadrant each named product sits in, using the specific figures from the question, not a general description of the matrix. 4Understanding the client's market
Giving a one-sided evaluation in the 16-mark question, listing only advantages or only disadvantages of a chosen research methodology.
Include at least one limitation or cost alongside every advantage, and close with a judgement on whether the method is still the right choice given that limitation. 3Techniques for business planning
Leaving out a justified strategic recommendation when a question asks for one, which limits the answer to a lower marking band regardless of the analysis before it.
End every strategy question with a specific recommendation, and justify it by referring back to the analysis and data already used earlier in the answer.
Describing risk estimation in general terms without naming the quantitative scoring mechanism, likelihood multiplied by impact, that produces a risk score.
State the calculation directly: likelihood multiplied by impact gives a risk score, which is then used to decide which risks need the most attention. 2Techniques for business planning
Assuming a 'Dog' product in the Boston Matrix must always be withdrawn immediately, rather than considering cash flow retention, harvesting the product, or a turnaround plan.
Mention that a Dog product can sometimes be kept for the cash it still generates, or given a turnaround plan, rather than assuming liquidation is the only option. 2Understanding the client's market
Assuming a primary online survey has no cost, overlooking the setup, platform, design and analysis time it actually requires.
Name the specific costs of running an online survey, platform fees, design time, and the time needed to analyse the results, when comparing it with other research methods. 2The consultancy process
Writing about a professional business consultant as if they were an operational manager inside the client's business, rather than an external adviser who guides and persuades internal stakeholders.
Keep the consultant's role framed as external and advisory: they investigate, recommend, and persuade, rather than directly run the client's operations. 3Persuading, negotiating and influencing
Losing quality of written communication marks in Questions 4b, 5, and 6 through disjointed structure, weak specialist vocabulary, and poor paragraphing.
Plan these three answers in paragraphs before writing, each covering one idea, and use the specification's own terms, stakeholder, consultancy process, risk appetite, rather than everyday phrasing. 3The consultancy process
Applying analysis generically to 'a business' instead of the named client, missing the specific market share percentages or employee numbers given in the question.
Quote the client's own figures directly in your answer and explain what they mean for that specific business, not for businesses in general.
