Overall Exam Difficulty & Paper Character
The 2023 CCEA AS Economics papers presented a balanced, highly accessible yet rigorous examination of micro- and macroeconomic theory. Both AS 1 (Markets and Market Failure) and AS 2 (Managing the National Economy) follow a structured three-section format: short-answer and quantitative questions in Section A (25 marks), a cohesive data response in Section B (35 marks), and a choice of extended evaluative essays in Section C (20 marks).
Where the Marks Were Won & Lost
In Section A, direct calculations (cross-price elasticity, tax revenue, percentage changes in CPI, and cross exchange rates) offered easy marks for well-practised students. However, precision was heavily penalised where candidates omitted units (such as millions or percentages) or miscalculated consumer surplus geometry \(\frac{1}{2} \times \text{base} \times \text{height}\).
In Section B, data handling questions required both accurate reading of absolute figures and explicit relative mathematical manipulation (e.g. percentage differences). High marks in the 9-mark analytical questions hinged on complete, fully labelled diagrams showing exact price, output, and welfare loss or equilibrium shifts.
In Section C, top-band scripts successfully deployed relevant contextual examples (such as Scottish minimum unit pricing for alcohol or UK labour inactivity metrics) and delivered nuanced, balanced evaluations addressing both theoretical benefits and real-world trade-offs.
Key Strategies for Future Candidates
- Diagram Accuracy: Ensure all axes, shifts, and equilibrium intersections (e.g., \(MSB=MSC\), \(AD/AS\)) are crisply labelled.
- Data Response Technique: Always include at least one calculated percentage change or relative ratio alongside raw data quotations.
- Balanced Evaluation: High-tariff (15 and 20 mark) questions require structured counter-arguments and a supported final judgement.
