**Title:** Wearing the Change: Why Our Wardrobes Matter

Good morning, teachers and fellow students,

Look around this assembly hall. We are a generation defined by our choices, our voices, and our passion for the future. Yet, there is a silent crisis hanging right inside our closets, one that we wear every single day. I am talking about fast fashion—the culture of cheap, rapidly produced clothing designed to be worn a handful of times and then discarded. Today, as we kick off ‘Green Week’ at our school, it is time to look closely at the true cost of our outfits.

Many of us do not realize that the fashion industry is one of the world’s largest polluters. It is responsible for nearly ten percent of global carbon emissions—more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Think about a simple cotton T-shirt. Producing just one shirt requires approximately 2,700 liters of water. That is enough water for one person to drink for two and a half years! Furthermore, most of our trendy garments are made of synthetic fibers like polyester, which are essentially plastics. When we wash these clothes, millions of microplastics enter our waterways, poisoning marine life and eventually entering our own food chain. When we throw these cheap garments away, they sit in landfills for centuries, releasing toxic greenhouse gases as they slowly decay.

It is easy to feel powerless in the face of these staggering facts. However, our individual consumer habits carry immense power. When we refuse to participate in the cycle of hyper-consumption, we directly reduce the demand for mass-produced, disposable garments. By shifting our mindset from 'buying more' to 'valuing what we have,' we send a powerful message to multinational corporations. If we stop buying cheap, exploitative fashion, companies will be forced to pivot toward sustainable production methods. Every dollar we spend is a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.

So, how can we build a sustainable wardrobe starting today? Fortunately, making a difference does not require a massive budget; in fact, it saves money.

First, we must embrace the '30 Wears Rule.' Before buying any piece of clothing, ask yourself: 'Will I wear this at least thirty times?' If the answer is no, leave it on the rack.

Second, let us rediscover the joy of thrift shopping and second-hand vintage markets. Extending the life of a garment by just nine months reduces its carbon, water, and waste footprints by around twenty to thirty percent.

Third, let's organize clothing swaps! Next month, we will be hosting our first school-wide 'Sip and Swap' event right here in the cafeteria. Bring five items you no longer wear and trade them for something fresh. It is free, creative, and completely eco-friendly.

My friends, sustainability is not about being perfect; it is about making conscious, deliberate choices. Let us make our school a beacon of sustainable living. Let’s dress for the future we want to inherit.

Thank you.

評分準則

The writing is assessed against the official IB Language B Criteria (Total 30 marks):

### Criterion A: Language (12 Marks)
- **9–12 Marks:** Command of the language is very effective. Highly appropriate vocabulary, a wide range of grammatical structures used accurately, and very few errors. The style and register are highly appropriate for the chosen text type.
- **5–8 Marks:** Language is generally effective. Vocabulary is appropriate for the task, with some complex structures attempted. Errors do not hinder communication.
- **1–4 Marks:** Language is limited. Frequent errors impede comprehension; limited vocabulary and repetitive sentence structures.

### Criterion B: Message (12 Marks)
- **9–12 Marks:** The task is fully addressed with excellent development of ideas. The student comprehensively covers the ecological impacts, the power of consumer choices, and clear, realistic practical suggestions. The ideas are logically structured with smooth transitions.
- **5–8 Marks:** The task is mostly addressed. Some ideas are developed, but they may lack depth or balance (e.g., focusing too much on impacts and neglecting solutions).
- **1–4 Marks:** Minimal development of ideas. The message is disorganized, incomplete, or highly superficial.

### Criterion C: Conceptual Understanding / Format (6 Marks)
- **5–6 Marks:** The chosen text type is highly appropriate. Register and tone are consistent throughout (e.g., engaging and persuasive for a speech/blog; formal and analytical for a proposal). The structural conventions of the chosen text type are fully respected (e.g., clear introduction/conclusion, direct audience address for a speech; title, subheadings, and calls to action for a blog post).
- **3–4 Marks:** The text type is recognizable but has some inconsistencies in register, tone, or structural conventions.
- **1–2 Marks:** Little to no awareness of text type conventions. The response reads like a generic essay.

**Eco-Neighbourhoods: The Green Revolution in Sector 4**
In Sector 4 of the city, residents have taken environmental protection into their own hands. Five years ago, the local waste disposal site was overflowing, leading to health concerns. Instead of waiting for municipal intervention, a community group called 'Green Steps' initiated a localized composting program. Today, over 70% of households participate actively, converting organic waste into nutrient-rich soil used in the neighborhood's communal gardens. To fund this, they sell surplus compost to local nurseries. However, challenges remain: some residents initially complained about potential odors, but the installation of modern, sealed aerated bins successfully resolved these concerns. Furthermore, the group is now targeting single-use plastics by partnering with local businesses to offer discounts to customers who bring their own containers.

**Statements:**
A. The composting program was started by the city municipality to clean up the overflowing landfill.
B. More than two-thirds of the households in Sector 4 are currently involved in the composting initiative.
C. The community group uses the profit from compost sales to pay the residents who participate.
D. Modern, sealed aerated bins were introduced to address the community's worries about bad smells.
E. 'Green Steps' is collaborating with local shops to reduce the use of single-use plastics.
F. The communal gardens have been completely replaced by local commercial nurseries.
