N5 Kanji Reading: Your Complete 漢字読み Course

Welcome to N5! This chapter is your kanji-reading guide for the level: essential basic kanji with their readings, the rules for choosing the right reading, and exactly how the exam's 問題1(漢字読み)questions test them. You may already know about 30 of these characters from Basic Japanese (numbers, days of the week, 人・大・小…), so part of the work is done — now we build out a strong foundational set and, more importantly, master the reading system.

How the exam tests this: in 問題1 of the Vocabulary section you encounter short sentences, each with one word in kanji underlined, and you choose the correct hiragana reading from 4 options. The wrong options are not random — they are traps built from real reading mistakes (wrong vowel length, missing っ, on-reading instead of kun-reading, rendaku errors). Learn the readings as words and the traps lose their power.

1. The Reading System: When 音読み, When 訓読み?

From Basic Japanese you know each kanji usually has a Chinese-derived 音読み and a native 訓読み. The working rules:

  • Kanji compound (2+ kanji together) → 音読み: 学生(がくせい), 先生(せんせい), 電車(でんしゃ), 毎日(まいにち).
  • Kanji alone or with okurigana → 訓読み: 山(やま), 水(みず), 食べる(たべる), 高い(たかい).
  • Exceptions exist and the exam loves them — especially special whole-word readings (熟字訓): 今日(きょう), 明日(あした), 今朝(けさ), 大人(おとな), 一人(ひとり), 二人(ふたり), 上手(じょうず), 下手(へた), 時計(とけい), 眼鏡(めがね), 友達(ともだち).

Three sound changes to recognize

  • Rendaku(連濁): the second element of a compound often voices: 時(とき)→ 時々(ときどき), 花+火→はなび, 手+紙→てがみ.
  • Sokuon change: つ/ち + k/s/t/p squeezes into っ: 学(がく)+校(こう)→ 学校(がっこう), 一(いち)+分(ふん)→ 一分(いっぷん).
  • h→p/b after ん・っ: 分(ふん)→ 三分(さんぷん), 半(はん)→ 三時半 no change but 百(ひゃく)→ 三百(さんびゃく), 六百(ろっぴゃく).

2. Core Basic Kanji, by Theme

Format: on'yomi in katakana, kun'yomi in hiragana (okurigana after the dot). ★ marks kanji you met in Basic Japanese — review their readings, then focus your energy on the new ones. Read every example word aloud.

3. The Special Readings the Exam Loves

These whole-word readings ignore the normal rules — they are the single richest source of 問題1 questions. Drill them as a set:

WordReadingTrap it beats
今日きょうnot こんにち (as a standalone word)
今朝けさnot こんあさ
明日あした—
今年ことしnot こんねん
大人おとなnot だいにん
一人/二人ひとり/ふたりnot いちにん/ににん
下手へたnot したて
上手じょうずnot うわて
友達ともだちrendaku: だち not たち
時計とけい—
一日ついたち(1st of month)/いちにち(one day)context decides!
十日とおかnot じゅうにち
二十日はつかnot にじゅうにち
九時/四時/七時くじ/よじ/しちじnot きゅうじ/よんじ

4. How the Exam Tests This — and How to Win

Format (問題1): 「わたしの 母 は先生です。」→ ① はは ② ちち ③ あね ④ いもうと. You pick the reading of the underlined word as used in this sentence.

Worked example

すみません、入り口はどこですか。
① はいりくち ② いりくち ③ いりぐち ④ にゅうこう

Think: 入り口 has okurigana (り), so it is kun'yomi territory → いり + くち, and the compound voices くち → ぐち (rendaku). Answer: ③ いりぐち. Notice how ① uses the wrong kun form, ② forgets rendaku, and ④ force-fits on'yomi — the three classic distractor recipes.

Strategy checklist

  • Read the whole sentence first — 一日 is ついたち in a date but いちにち in "all day"; context is part of the question.
  • Check vowel length carefully: おばさん/おばあさん-type traps appear as ゆき/ゆうき, こうこう/ここ. Say the options silently with exact beats.
  • Check for っ: がっこう not がこう; きって not きて; 一分→いっぷん.
  • Rendaku sense: second elements often voice — てがみ, でぐち, ときどき, ともだち. If an option is the unvoiced twin of another, rendaku is being tested.
  • Numbers + counters are half the battle: review ついたち…とおか, ひとり・ふたり, よじ・くじ・しちじ, さんぼん・さんびゃく・さんぜん from Basic Japanese — they are recycled here mercilessly.
  • 問題1 is speed territory: aim for ~30 seconds per item, bank the saved time for reading.

5. Study Plan

  • Work one theme table per day (write each new kanji 5 times, say the example words aloud). ~2 weeks covers this foundational set.
  • For every kanji, memorize one on-word and one kun-word rather than abstract reading lists — 水: みず/すいようび covers both readings forever.
  • Then drill the special-readings table until instant. Finally, quiz yourself backwards: see こうこう → write 高校.

Summary & Key Takeaways

  • Basic kanji at N5: compounds → 音読み, standalone/okurigana → 訓読み, plus a recurring set of special readings (きょう, おとな, ひとり, へた…) that the exam tests hardest.
  • Sound changes: rendaku (てがみ), っ-squeeze (がっこう), and ん+ h→p (さんぷん).
  • 問題1 distractors = wrong vowel length, missing っ, unvoiced rendaku, or the wrong reading type — check each systematically.
  • Learn readings as words, one on-word + one kun-word per kanji, and the whole system compresses beautifully.
